Short answer: NIH's weekly bulletins show 32 positive mpox tests in Sindh's public health labs from week 34 to week 41 of 2026. Week 41 had the most, 8 positives from 38 samples. One suspected case was also reported from Islamabad that week. No other province shows mpox tests in these bulletins.

Mpox is a viral infection that causes a rash, fever and swollen glands, and it spreads through close contact. Until now, figures for Pakistan have mostly come from statements quoted in the press. This page uses the National Institutes of Health (NIH) bulletins themselves, week by week, and explains what the numbers do and do not show. We will update it with each new bulletin.

Sindh's labs found 32 positive mpox samples in eight weeks

The lab table in NIH's weekly bulletin lists mpox tests only for Sindh. From week 34 to week 41 it shows 131 samples tested and 32 positive, about one in four. Week 38's bulletin had no mpox row, so we count it as no data, not zero.

The totals are our own sums from each bulletin's Table 5. The bulletins do not name the districts the samples came from, and they do not report deaths from mpox.

A positive test is not the same as a count of people

NIH's lab table counts samples tested and samples positive. It does not say how many separate patients those are. One person may be tested more than once, so 32 positive samples does not mean exactly 32 people.

The table also covers only public health laboratories. Private labs and hospital labs may test other patients. So the real number of infections could be higher or lower than the lab line shows. What the line does show is that mpox is being confirmed in Sindh every few weeks, and that testing rose to 38 samples in week 41, the most in this period.

Islamabad reported one suspected case in week 41

The week 41 case table lists one suspected mpox case from Islamabad Capital Territory and none from other areas that report. Punjab is marked "NR", not reported, in the case tables. A suspected case still needs a lab test to confirm it.

The bulletin does not give the patient's age, travel history or test result for the Islamabad case. We will add the result if a later bulletin reports one. The Sindh lab positives do not appear in the suspected case table, so the two sets of figures should be read separately.

What to do if you think you have mpox

Mpox usually starts with fever, headache and swollen glands, then a rash or blisters. It spreads through skin to skin contact, contact with sores, and shared bedding or towels. Anyone with these signs should get tested and avoid close contact.

  1. Cover any rash and avoid close contact with family members, especially children and pregnant women.
  2. Do not share towels, bedding, razors or utensils.
  3. Call or visit a government hospital or your doctor and tell them you suspect mpox before you arrive.
  4. Ask for a PCR test, which is the test used to confirm mpox.
  5. Follow the isolation advice the doctor gives until the sores have healed.

We give no treatment advice beyond this. Our page on mpox symptoms and what to do in Pakistan covers the signs, risk groups and testing in more detail.

Five steps to take if you suspect mpox in Pakistan

Check the latest figures in the NIH bulletin

NIH posts the bulletin as a free PDF. Mpox appears in two places: Table 1, the suspected cases by province, and Table 5, the public health lab results. In recent weeks Table 5 has shown mpox only under Sindh.

Open the NIH weekly bulletin page, download the newest 2026 file, and search the PDF for "Mpox". The same bulletin carries other weekly counts we track, including dengue and malaria.

Common questions

How many mpox cases are there in Pakistan in 2026?

NIH's bulletins show 32 positive mpox samples in Sindh's public health labs from week 34 to week 41 of 2026. They do not give a full year total or a count of patients.

Are there mpox cases in Karachi?

The NIH lab table lists Sindh as a whole and does not name districts. We could not confirm from an official source which Sindh districts the positive samples came from.

Is there mpox in Islamabad?

The week 41 bulletin lists one suspected mpox case in Islamabad. It does not say whether a test confirmed it.

How many mpox tests were positive in the latest week?

In week 41, Sindh's public health labs tested 38 samples and 8 were positive, the highest weekly count in the period we checked.

How is mpox confirmed?

A PCR test on a sample from the rash or sores confirms mpox. Ask a doctor or government hospital where the test is available.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read the NIH IDSR weekly bulletins for weeks 34 to 41 of 2026 from the NIH weekly bulletin page on 4 November 2026, and searched each PDF for mpox. Lab figures are from Table 5 and the Islamabad suspected case from Table 1 of week 41. Totals and percentages are our own arithmetic. Press figures for Sindh mpox cases and deaths are not used because we could not find them on an official page.
