Short answer: PIMS Islamabad runs its OPD from 8am to 2pm and again from 3pm to 6pm, the hospital's own FAQ says. Emergency is open 24 hours, and so is the pharmacy. The main phone line is 051-9261170 to 79. The hospital sits on Ibn-e-Sina Road, G-8/3, Islamabad.

PIMS, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, is the capital's biggest federal hospital. It treats patients from Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan. We read every public page on pims.gov.pk on 10 October 2026, and the details below come from there.

PIMS OPD runs 8am to 2pm and 3pm to 6pm

The outpatient department at PIMS sees patients from 8am to 2pm, then from 3pm to 6pm, with a one hour break in between. Emergency and the pharmacy stay open all day and all night. Admission to a ward usually goes through the emergency department.

Arrive early. The Islamabad Hospital OPD alone sees more than 1,200 patients a day, PIMS says, so the morning queue is the long one. The evening slot is a real option if you work.

OPD, first session8:00am to 2:00pm
OPD, second session3:00pm to 6:00pm

The FAQ does not give separate hours for Friday or Sunday. Ask at the information desk before you plan a Friday afternoon or a Sunday visit, because many clinics close early.

PIMS is five hospitals on one campus

PIMS is not one building. It has five patient care parts: Islamabad Hospital, the Children's Hospital, the Mother and Child Health Centre, the Burn Care Centre and the Cardiac Centre. Each has its own OPD and emergency, so go to the right one first.

PIMS's own pages give two sets of bed numbers. The About page lists the higher figures, and the older history pages list lower ones. We show the About page figures here.

PIMS also runs a Breast Cancer Screening Centre, a bone marrow transplant unit and a thalassemia unit for adults and children. Women looking for a free breast cancer check can ask for the screening centre by name at the main reception.

Islamabad Hospital covers more than 20 specialties

Islamabad Hospital, the main adult block, lists more than 20 clinical specialties. These include general surgery, medicine, ENT, eye, brain surgery, urology, bones, kidneys, cancer, psychiatry, lungs, skin and an infectious diseases department.

Here is the full list as PIMS publishes it:

  • Surgery side: general surgery, dental and oral surgery, ENT, eye (ophthalmology), neurosurgery, urology, orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery.
  • Medicine side: general medicine, neurology, psychiatry, pulmonology (lungs), gastroenterology (stomach and liver), dermatology (skin), nephrology (kidneys) and oncology (cancer).
  • Support: physical medicine and rehabilitation, pathology lab, radiology, anaesthesia, surgical and medical ICUs, and the Accident and Emergency Centre.

The services page adds detail. Cardiology does ECG, echo, stress tests, angiography and pacemakers. Urology lists kidney transplant and lithotripsy, the shock wave treatment for kidney stones. The pathology lab runs routine tests and hepatitis B and C screening. If you need a psychiatrist at a government hospital, the PIMS psychiatry OPD is one of the closest for twin city residents.

Bring your CNIC and old reports to the OPD

To see a doctor at PIMS, go to the OPD of the right hospital on campus before 2pm, register at the counter and wait for your department to call you. Bring your CNIC, any old prescriptions and test reports. Keep the slip you are given.

  1. Pick the right block: Islamabad Hospital for adults, Children's Hospital for children, MCH Centre for pregnancy.
  2. Reach the OPD early, ideally by 8am, or come for the 3pm to 6pm session.
  3. Register at the counter with your CNIC, or the child's B-Form.
  4. Go to your department's clinic and wait for your number.
  5. Get any tests done at the PIMS lab or radiology, and come back with the results.
  6. Collect medicines from the pharmacy, which is open 24 hours.

PIMS's FAQ says you can ask for a particular doctor, subject to availability. It also says the hospital takes cash, cards and insurance, and has financial help for eligible patients. The Islamabad Hospital page lists a social welfare department and a Zakat counter for patients who cannot pay.

Attendants get free meals and a place to sleep

PIMS says attendants of patients get free meals three times a day, run with Saylani Welfare Trust under the Ehsaas programme. A shelter home gives attendants a place to sleep at night, and a separate sarai houses parents of children admitted to hospital.

That matters if you have travelled from Gilgit-Baltistan or upper KP with a patient. Ask the ward nurse or the welfare office where to register for these.

Call 051-9261170 to reach PIMS

The PIMS telephone exchange is 051-9261170 to 79, and the email is info@pims.gov.pk. The fax is 051-9260724. In a medical emergency, go straight to the Accident and Emergency Centre instead of calling.

PIMS warns on every page that it has no official social media accounts, and asks people to beware of fake profiles. Do not send money or reports to any "PIMS" page on Facebook or WhatsApp. If you have a complaint about treatment, use the hospital's patient relations desk first, then the routes in complaining against a hospital or doctor in Islamabad.

For transport, Edhi and Chhipa ambulances cover Islamabad and Rawalpindi. If PIMS is too crowded, Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi is another large teaching hospital nearby.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on Saturday 10 October 2026. We read the PIMS FAQ page for timings, admission and payment, the About page for components, beds, specialties and welfare services, the contact page, the services and departments pages, and the history pages of Islamabad Hospital, the Children's Hospital and the MCH Centre. The bed numbers differ between pages, so we used the About page and say so above.
