Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi runs its OPD from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 8am to 1pm on Friday. The emergency department works day and night. It is on Murree Road near Chandni Chowk, and treatment in this government hospital is free.
Benazir Bhutto Hospital, often called BBH, is one of the three teaching hospitals of Rawalpindi Medical University. It had 968 beds in 2024. That year its OPD saw 827,270 patients and its emergency saw 672,297, according to the hospital's own annual report.
We read that report, the hospital's page on the Rawalpindi Medical University website and the Punjab Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department's OPD notification on 29 September 2026. Here is what they say, and what they leave out.
BBH OPD timings are set by the Punjab government
OPD, the outpatient department, is where you see a doctor without being admitted. At BBH it opens at 8am. It closes at 4pm Monday to Saturday and at 1pm on Friday. These hours come from a Punjab government order for every teaching hospital.

The Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department, known as SH&ME, fixed these hours in a notification dated 23 December 2021. It is still the latest OPD timing order in the department's list of notifications. BBH is on the department's list of teaching hospitals, so the order covers it.
Hours on Sunday and public holidays are not in the order. Do not plan a routine OPD visit on those days. Go to the emergency department if it cannot wait.
Departments at Benazir Bhutto Hospital
BBH has 17 clinical and support departments. They cover medicine, children, heart, mental health, skin, surgery, bones, women's health, kidneys, ear nose and throat, eyes and teeth, with anaesthesia, radiology and a laboratory.
- Medical and allied: Medical Unit I, Medical Unit II, Paediatrics, Cardiology, Psychiatry and Dermatology.
- Surgical and allied: Surgical Unit I, Surgical Unit II, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Urology and Nephrology, ENT, Ophthalmology and Dental.
- Support: Anaesthesia, Radiology and Imaging, and Pathology.
That list is from the hospital's 2024 annual report. Two units stand out. The Institute of Psychiatry at BBH is a World Health Organization collaborating centre for mental health. And a kidney transplant programme started in the Urology department in September 2013.
Medicine is by far the busiest department. In 2024 it saw 328,404 patients across its OPD and emergency. Gynaecology saw 95,410 and Paediatrics 88,089. So expect the longest queues for medicine.
How to see a doctor in the BBH OPD
We found no online appointment or token system for BBH on any official page. So plan to go in person during OPD hours. Arrive early, because the OPD averaged more than 2,500 patients a working day in 2024.
- Go to the hospital on Murree Road, near Chandni Chowk, after 8am on a working day.
- Carry your CNIC, or the child's B-Form, and any old prescriptions and test reports.
- Get your OPD slip at the registration counter and ask which OPD room your department uses.
- Wait for your turn, then see the doctor. Keep the slip for tests and for the pharmacy.
- If the doctor asks for tests, do them in the hospital laboratory or radiology department.
The slip counter and room numbers are not listed on any official page we could read. Ask the staff at the gate. Friday is the shortest OPD day, so avoid it if you can.
Emergency at BBH is open day and night
The Accident and Emergency department at BBH works day and night, says Rawalpindi Medical University. In 2024 it saw 672,297 patients and handled 18,563 road accident cases. You do not need an OPD slip to go there.
The same report shows 4,626 dog bite cases and 3,499 burn cases at the emergency in 2024. So it treats a wide range of urgent problems, not only accidents. If you need an ambulance anywhere in Punjab, call Rescue 1122.
During outbreaks the emergency gets much busier. Rawalpindi's dengue cases in 2026 are one example of when to expect longer waits.
Sehat Card and fees at Benazir Bhutto Hospital
You do not need a Sehat Card at BBH. The Punjab Health Initiative Management Company says the card has been discontinued in government hospitals because treatment there is already free. BBH is a government teaching hospital.
The card still works in empanelled private hospitals. There, it pays in full for cancer, ICU, CCU and emergency care, and half for most other treatment. The details are in our note on what the Sehat Card covers now.
Some items may still cost money if the hospital pharmacy runs out and you are asked to buy from outside. Keep every receipt.

Rawalpindi Medical University lists +92 51 9330050 to 54 and info@rmur.edu.pk. That is the university's number, not a BBH patient line. We found no official BBH phone number on the university or SH&ME websites.
If you are unhappy with your treatment, speak first to the Medical Superintendent's office inside the hospital. If that fails, you can take it further, including a complaint against a hospital or doctor in Punjab to the Punjab Healthcare Commission.

The Benazir Bhutto Hospital Annual Report 2024, published on the same site, gave the beds, departments and patient figures. The Punjab SH&ME Department notification of 23 December 2021 gave the OPD hours, and its tertiary hospital list includes BBH. The Punjab Health Initiative Management Company's FAQ page gave the Sehat Card position. We could not find a BBH patient phone number, an online token system, or Sunday hours on any official page.
