In the PSL, a win is worth 2 points, a no result or abandoned match 1 point, and a loss nothing. Teams level on points are split first by wins, then net run rate, then wickets taken per ball bowled, and finally a coin toss. Ties go to a Super Over, and the top four reach the play-offs.

These rules come straight from the HBL PSL 11 Playing Conditions, the league's 2026 rulebook, which we read on 31 October 2026. PSL 12 runs from 18 March to 2 May 2027, and the league says it will review the playing conditions at a franchise workshop first. Until it publishes new ones, this is the official method.

A PSL win is worth 2 points and a washout 1 point

Teams get 2 points for a win, 1 point for a no result or an abandoned match, and 0 for a loss. If a tied match's Super Over cannot be finished, each team also gets 1 point. There are no bonus points in the PSL rulebook.

PSL 11 had one washout. Match 7, at the Gaddafi Stadium on 31 March 2026, was abandoned without a ball bowled, the league's results page shows. Both sides took a point each.

PSL points system: 2 for a win, 1 for a no result, 0 for a loss

Teams level on points are split by wins, then net run rate

If two or more teams finish on the same points, the team with more wins goes higher. If wins are also level, net run rate decides. If that is equal too, the rulebook uses wickets taken per legal ball bowled, and as a last resort, a coin toss.

  1. Most points.
  2. Most wins in the league stage.
  3. Higher net run rate.
  4. More wickets taken per legal delivery bowled, in matches with a result.
  5. A flip of a coin.

The first step matters more than most fans think. A team with a washout can be level on points with a team that won one more match, and the team with the extra win goes higher before net run rate is even checked.

Net run rate does decide places often. In PSL 11, Hyderabad Kingsmen beat Rawalpindiz by 108 runs in their last league game and knocked out the defending champions, Lahore Qalandars, on net run rate, the league said on 2 May 2026.

Net run rate counts a team bowled out as using all 20 overs

Net run rate is a team's runs per over scored minus runs per over conceded across the season. A team bowled out early is counted as if it faced its full 20 overs. Only matches with a result count toward it.

That second rule punishes a collapse twice. If a side is all out for 100 in 15 overs, its rate is worked out on 20 overs, so 5 runs an over, not 6.67. Pakistan's tri-series figures show how net run rate works with the same method.

When rain cuts a match and the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method sets the result, the rulebook gives special figures for net run rate. A DLS target when rain stops a match is worked out by the same method in ODIs.

A match needs 5 overs a side to count

A result needs both teams to have had the chance to bat at least 5 overs, unless one side is all out sooner or the chasing side wins sooner. Otherwise it is a no result. League matches get 30 minutes of extra time, play-offs and the final 60.

When overs are lost, the rulebook reduces both innings to the same length where it can, and the target is set by Duckworth/Lewis/Stern. A shortened game of 14 overs or less also loses its strategic timeouts, one of the PSL rules for overseas players, DRS and timeouts.

PSL rain rules: 5 overs a side for a result, 30 minutes extra time in the league and 60 in the play-offs

A tied match goes to a Super Over, and they repeat until there is a winner

A tied PSL match is settled by a Super Over, one over each, starting about 5 minutes after the match. Losing two wickets ends a side's over. If the Super Over is tied, another is played, and so on until there is a winner or time runs out.

In a repeat Super Over, the team that batted second bats first. A batter dismissed in one Super Over cannot bat in the next, and the bowler of one cannot bowl the next. Each side gets one unsuccessful review per Super Over innings.

Time is the limit. The extra time for Super Overs is the longer of 20 minutes or whatever is left of the match's extra time. If delays use that up, the Super Over is abandoned and the match stays a tie, worth a point each in the league.

The top four play a Qualifier, two Eliminators and a final

The top two teams meet in the Qualifier, whose winner goes straight to the final. Third and fourth play an Eliminator. The Qualifier loser then plays the Eliminator winner for the other final place. Washouts favour the team placed higher in the league.

The rulebook calls the third match Qualifier 2, while the league's PSL 11 releases called the two knockout games Eliminator 1 and Eliminator 2. The structure is the same. In PSL 11, Hyderabad Kingsmen won both Eliminators and reached the final, where Peshawar Zalmi beat them by five wickets on 3 May 2026.

The final has a reserve day. If no play happens on the final's day, the whole match moves to the reserve day. If the reserve day also gives no result, the team placed higher after the league stage is declared champion.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read clauses 13.7, 16.1, 16.10 to 16.13 and Appendix F of the HBL PSL 11 Playing Conditions, the league's PSL 2026 results page and its final releases of 2 and 3 May 2026, on 31 October 2026. The PSL 12 rulebook was not published when we checked.
