To report an open manhole in Karachi, call the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) on 1334 or file a complaint at complain.kwsc.gos.pk. On the online form, choose "Sewerage complains" and then "Open manhole". Add a nearby landmark and a photo, and save the complaint number to track it.

An open manhole on a dark street is a trap, for a child, a motorcyclist or anyone walking after rain when the water hides the hole. Most people know it is dangerous. Fewer know there is a named complaint for it on the city water utility's own form.

We opened KWSC's complaint form on 1 October 2026 and read every option in it. "Open manhole" is one of eleven sewerage problems you can pick. "Damaged manhole" and "Broken ring slab" are separate choices. We did not submit a test complaint, because a false report would send a crew to a hole that does not exist.

Ways to report an open manhole in Karachi: KWSC helpline 1334 and the online complaint form

KWSC handles open manhole complaints in Karachi

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation runs the city's sewer lines, and its complaint system lists open manholes by name. KWSC's own website answers "Where can I complain about sewerage?" with two routes: the online portal at complain.kwsc.gos.pk, or a call to 1334.

The same 1334 number is KWSC's line for reporting water theft and illegal connections. Its head office is at 9th Mile Karsaz, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and its website gives the main number as 021 111 597 200. The tanker service runs through a separate app, which we covered for booking an official water tanker.

Sewerage problems you can report on the KWSC form

Pick "Sewerage complains" as the complaint type and the form shows eleven grievances. For a hole with no lid, choose "Open manhole". For a cracked or sinking lid, choose "Damaged manhole". For a broken concrete ring around it, choose "Broken ring slab".

This is the full list the form returned when we checked:

Grievance on the formWhen to pick it
Open manholeThe lid is missing and the hole is open
Damaged manholeThe lid is cracked, broken or sinking
Broken ring slabThe concrete ring around the manhole is broken
Over flowSewage is coming up onto the street

Dispute on diggingA dispute over road or street digging
KWSC complaint form lists 11 sewerage problems including open manhole and damaged manhole

The form also lists "Electrical and mechanical" and "New connection residential" under sewerage. Water supply problems sit under a separate type called "Water complains".

How to file an open manhole complaint online

Open complain.kwsc.gos.pk and press "Add Complaint". Fill in your name, phone number, town, union council or mohalla, and the nearest landmark. Choose the complaint type and grievance, describe the spot in up to 350 characters, and attach a photo.

  1. Stand where you can see the manhole but well away from the edge. Note the street, the nearest shop, mosque or school, and any house number.
  2. Take a clear photo in daylight if you can, with something in the frame that shows where it is.
  3. Open the form at complain.kwsc.gos.pk and choose "Add Complaint".
  4. Fill in the required fields: your name, phone number, town, UC or mohalla, nearest landmark, complaint type, grievance and description.
  5. Choose "Sewerage complains", then "Open manhole".
  6. Write a short description. For example: "Open manhole in the middle of the lane behind the school, no cover, very dangerous at night."
  7. Attach the photo and submit. Write down the complaint number.
Steps to report an open manhole on the KWSC online complaint form in Karachi

The consumer number from a water bill is optional, as are your email and home address. You do not need to be a KWSC customer to report a hazard on the road. The town list on the form has 29 options, from Baldia and Clifton to Orangi, Safoora and Sohrab Goth, so pick the town where the manhole is, not where you live.

Track the complaint and when to escalate

Track it on the same site: press "Track Your Complaint" and enter the complaint number and your mobile number. If the hole stays open, call 1334 with the number, then escalate on the Pakistan Citizen's Portal with your KWSC complaint number and photos attached.

KWSC does not publish a deadline for closing a manhole complaint, so we cannot tell you how long is too long. Our view is simple. A missing lid on a busy street is an emergency, and a day without action is a fair point to call 1334 again. Keep the number, the date and your photos together. Each follow up is stronger with them.

The Citizen's Portal is the next step if nothing moves. Learn how to use the Pakistan Citizen's Portal to file, and how to reopen a complaint that was closed without the work being done.

Make the spot safe while you wait

Do not try to lift or replace a lid yourself. Warn people instead. Put something tall and visible beside the hole, such as a branch, a crate or an old tyre, and tell the shops nearby. If someone has fallen in, call for emergency help first and report the manhole afterwards.

Sewer gases can build up below ground, so never climb in or lean over the opening. Keep children well back, especially after rain when the hole may be full of water and impossible to see. If you need a number in a hurry, keep a list of emergency numbers in Pakistan on your phone.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 1 October 2026. We read the KWSC website, including its answers on sewerage complaints and water theft and its contact details. We opened the KWSC complaint portal, read the fields on its complaint form and loaded the grievance list for sewerage and water complaints. We did not file a complaint, so we cannot report how fast KWSC responds. KWSC publishes no target time for manhole complaints.
