How to Check Your Sehat Card Eligibility

Your CNIC is the card, and the programme is not one national scheme any more. How to check by SMS to 8500 and what differs by province.

Checking Sehat Card eligibility in Pakistan with a CNIC

There is no single Sehat Card in Pakistan any more, and that is the reason nothing you read about it seems to match your situation.

What began as one federal programme has become a set of provincial health schemes with different names, different eligibility and different coverage. Your CNIC is the card, there is nothing physical to collect, but what that CNIC entitles you to depends entirely on which province you are in.

Who runs it where

WherePosition
Khyber PakhtunkhwaRuns as Sehat Card Plus
PunjabRuns as the Sehat Sahulat Card, with provincial eligibility rules
Sindh and BalochistanEligibility follows the provincial government's own health programme
Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-BaltistanCovered under the federal Sehat Sahulat Programme

This is why a relative in Peshawar and a relative in Karachi can have completely different answers about the same "Sehat Card", and both be right. Health is a devolved subject, and each province has taken the programme in its own direction.

How the Sehat Card programme differs across Pakistan's provinces

How to check your status

  1. Send your CNIC number to 8500 by SMS. This is the widely used check and it returns your status.
  2. Or use the Sehat Sahulat Programme app, available on the Google Play Store, logging in with your CNIC to see coverage and hospital information.
  3. Or ask at the hospital directly. Empanelled hospitals have a Sehat Card desk that can verify entitlement against your CNIC on the spot.

That third route is the one we would push hardest, and it is the one nobody writes about. The hospital desk is the only place that tells you what you are actually entitled to today, at that hospital, for that treatment. An SMS tells you that a record exists. It does not tell you whether the procedure you need is covered or whether that hospital is empanelled for it.

What we could not verify, stated plainly

We hold ourselves to reading the authority's own pages before stating something as fact. On this topic we could not.

We could not resolve sehatsahulat.gov.pk or sehatcard.gov.pk. Neither address responded to us. That does not mean the programme is not operating, and provincial portals may well be live under addresses we did not identify, but it does mean the process detail on this page comes from reporting rather than from a government page we opened.

So we are also not publishing a coverage amount. Figures in the range of a million rupees per family circulate widely for this programme. Coverage limits differ by province, have changed over time, and vary by treatment category. Quoting a number we have not verified, on a health page, is exactly the thing that sends someone to a hospital expecting cover they do not have.

Take the amount from the hospital's Sehat Card desk or your provincial health department. Not from us, and not from a site with a headline number in it.

What the programme is designed to do

The model is health insurance funded by government, in which an entitled family receives treatment at an empanelled hospital without paying at the point of care. The hospital claims from the programme instead.

Two things follow that matter practically.

Only empanelled hospitals participate. The card is worthless at a hospital that is not on the panel, so the question to ask is not whether you have cover but whether this hospital accepts it. Check before an admission rather than during one.

Coverage is by treatment category, not unlimited. Programmes of this kind separate what is covered as inpatient treatment from what is not covered at all, and outpatient consultations, routine medicines and diagnostics frequently sit outside.

What to ask before relying on the Sehat Card at a hospital

Questions to ask before you need it

  1. Is my family entitled under my province's current scheme? Not under the programme as it was three years ago.
  2. Which hospitals near me are empanelled? Get the list before an emergency, not during one.
  3. Is the treatment I am likely to need in a covered category?
  4. What is the current coverage limit for my province?
  5. What documents does the hospital desk want? Usually the CNIC alone, but confirm.

The reason to do this while healthy is obvious and worth saying anyway. Nobody researches health entitlements well at two in the morning with a relative in an emergency room.

The scams around it

Any programme this large attracts fraud, and the pattern is familiar from the ones we document constantly.

There is no card to buy. Your CNIC is the card. Anyone selling a physical Sehat Card, a registration, or an "activation" is selling nothing, in the same way as the fake scheme selections we have written about before.

Checking is free. An SMS to 8500 costs a standard message and the hospital desk costs nothing.

Nobody calls you about your Sehat Card entitlement. If someone rings asking for a code sent to your phone, that is an attempt on your mobile wallet, not a health service.

If you are checking other government entitlements at the same time, the BISP 8171 check works the same way and attracts the same impersonation.

Questions readers are asking

How do I check my Sehat Card eligibility?

Send your CNIC number to 8500 by SMS, use the Sehat Sahulat Programme app, or ask at the Sehat Card desk of an empanelled hospital. The hospital desk gives the most accurate answer for a specific treatment.

Do I need a physical card?

No. Your CNIC functions as the card. Anyone selling you a physical card or a registration is running a scam.

Is the Sehat Card the same across Pakistan?

No. It runs as Sehat Card Plus in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and as the Sehat Sahulat Card in Punjab, eligibility in Sindh and Balochistan follows those provinces' own health programmes, and AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan are covered federally.

How much treatment does it cover?

We are not quoting a figure. Limits differ by province and by treatment category and have changed over time. Confirm the current limit with the hospital's Sehat Card desk or your provincial health department.

Can I use it at any hospital?

No. Only hospitals empanelled under your province's scheme participate. Check which hospitals near you are on the panel before you need one.

Does it cover outpatient visits and medicines?

Programmes of this type generally centre on inpatient treatment, with outpatient consultations, routine medicines and diagnostics often outside the cover. Confirm the categories for your province.

Is there an official website?

We could not resolve the addresses commonly cited for the federal programme when we tried them. Use your provincial health department, the app, or the hospital desk rather than a lookalike site.
