How to Buy a Laptop in Pakistan Without Getting Cheated: 7 Checks

Buying a new or used laptop in Pakistan? Check the serial on the maker's warranty site, spot a fake box pack, test battery health and know your rights.

Before you pay for a laptop in Pakistan, type its serial number into the maker's own warranty site: HP at support.hp.com, Dell by Service Tag at dell.com/support, Lenovo at pcsupport.lenovo.com and Apple at checkcoverage.apple.com. If the warranty started months ago, the "new" laptop is not new. Then check the battery and get an invoice with the serial written on it.

Hafeez Centre in Lahore and Saddar in Karachi sell thousands of laptops a month, and most deals are honest. The trouble starts with three words a buyer hears often: "box pack", "warranty" and "imported". Each can mean less than it sounds. We read the warranty and support pages of HP, Dell, Lenovo and Apple on 7 October 2026, and the checks below use only what those makers publish. We do not list prices, because they move every week.

Seven checks to make before paying for any laptop

Ask whose warranty it is, check the serial on the maker's site, match the serial on the sticker and in the system, test the battery, confirm Windows is activated, inspect the body and ports, and leave with an invoice that carries the serial.

Checklist of the main checks before buying a laptop in Pakistan, from warranty type to the invoice
  1. Ask whose warranty it is. Get the answer in words: the maker's official warranty, or the shop's own.
  2. Check the serial on the maker's site. The result shows the model and when cover started and ends.
  3. Match the serial in three places. The sticker under the laptop, the box and the system itself must all agree.
  4. Test the battery. Run the Windows battery report or read the Mac cycle count, steps below.
  5. Confirm Windows is activated. Open Settings, System, Activation. A pirated copy can stop updates later.
  6. Inspect the body. Try every key, every port, the webcam, speakers and the hinge, and use the original charger.
  7. Get a proper invoice. It should show the shop's name, the date, the price and the serial number.

Official warranty and shop warranty are different promises

An official warranty is the maker's promise, honoured at its authorised service centres. A shop warranty is only the seller's promise, and it lasts as long as the shop does. Ask which one you are getting before you agree a price.

Typical wording at the counter"Official", "local warranty""Checking warranty", "7 days", "shop warranty"

Neither is wrong. A shop warranty on an imported laptop can be a fair deal if the price reflects it. The problem is paying an official-warranty price for a shop-warranty laptop. For Apple, the company's own Find Locations page for Pakistan lists Apple Authorised Resellers and service providers, so you can see if a shop is on it.

Check the serial number on the maker's warranty site

Every big brand runs a free lookup. Enter the serial number and you see the exact model and the warranty dates. That one screen settles most arguments before money changes hands.

Where to check laptop warranty by serial number for HP, Dell, Lenovo and Apple
  • HP: support.hp.com, Check warranty. Enter the serial number or product number.
  • Dell: dell.com/support. Enter the Service Tag, a seven character code on the sticker. Dell's own support page shows how to read it through Windows PowerShell too.
  • Lenovo: pcsupport.lenovo.com, Warranty lookup, with a Pakistan page.
  • Apple: checkcoverage.apple.com. Enter the MacBook's serial number.

On a Windows laptop, the serial stored in the system can be read without trusting the sticker. Open PowerShell and type Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS. The SerialNumber line should match the sticker and the box. On a Mac, open the Apple menu, then About This Mac. If the numbers disagree, walk away.

A "box pack" laptop can still be used or refurbished

"Box pack" only means the laptop sits in a box. A refurbished or returned unit can be resealed. The maker's warranty lookup is the honest test: a new laptop's cover should start around the day you buy it, not months earlier.

Warning that a box pack laptop whose warranty started months ago is not new

If the site shows a warranty that began a year ago, or one that has already expired, the laptop has been sold or activated before. That may be fine for a cheap used laptop. It is not fine at a new-laptop price. Other signs are a worn keyboard shine, scratched screws on the base and a charger from a different brand.

Check battery health on Windows and Mac

A tired battery is the costliest hidden fault in a used laptop. Windows writes a free battery report that compares today's capacity with the original, and a Mac shows its cycle count in System Information.

How to read laptop battery health on Windows with the battery report and on Mac with the cycle count

Windows: open Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport. Windows saves a battery-report file and shows where. Open it and find Installed batteries. Divide Full Charge Capacity by Design Capacity and multiply by 100. That is the battery's health.

Mac: hold the Option key, click the Apple menu and choose System Information. Under Hardware, select Power and read the Cycle Count. Apple says recent MacBook batteries are rated for 1,000 cycles and are designed to keep up to 80 per cent of their capacity at that count. A three-year-old MacBook near 1,000 cycles will need a new battery soon, so price that in.

Bringing a laptop from abroad, and what to do with a faulty one

A laptop in your own use comes in duty free, but a boxed spare may count against your allowance. If a laptop you bought in Pakistan turns out faulty, the consumer protection laws let you claim against the maker or seller.

The rules for bringing a laptop into Pakistan from abroad depend on whether the laptop is in your own use or still sealed. Remember that a laptop bought abroad may carry a warranty that only that country's service centres honour, so check the maker's terms before relying on it here.

For a laptop that fails inside its warranty, start at the brand's authorised service centre and take a written job sheet. If they refuse, the steps for claiming an electronics warranty when a shop refuses apply. A laptop sold with a hidden fault can also go to a consumer court without a lawyer. Buying online instead? First check if the online store is real.

Common questions

How do I know if a laptop is new or refurbished?

Check the serial on the maker's warranty site. A new laptop's warranty should begin around your purchase date. Cover that started months earlier means it was sold or activated before.

Is a shop warranty valid at the brand's service centre?

No. A shop warranty is the seller's own promise, claimed at that shop. Only the maker's official warranty is honoured at its authorised service centres.

What battery health is acceptable on a used laptop?

Higher is better. Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80 per cent of capacity at their rated cycle count, so a battery well below 80 per cent is near the end of its life.

Do I need to register a laptop with PTA?

No, not a normal laptop. Only a device with a SIM slot falls under PTA's DIRBS registration rules.

What should the invoice show?

The shop's name and address, the date, the price, the model and the serial number. Without the serial, the shop can deny that it sold you that unit.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We last checked these pages on 7 October 2026. We read each maker's support pages but did not buy or test a laptop for this article.

  • HP Support, Check warranty: lookup by serial number or product number.
  • Apple Support, Determine battery cycle count for Mac laptops: System Information path, 1,000 cycle rating and 80 per cent design note. Apple Find Locations for Pakistan and checkcoverage.apple.com.
  • Dell Support for Pakistan: Service Tag lookup and locating the Service Tag with Windows PowerShell. Lenovo Support Pakistan: Warranty lookup.
  • Microsoft's support forum on the powercfg /batteryreport report and the Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity figures.
