Short answer: To change your name, father's name or date of birth on a Pakistani passport, first correct your CNIC or NICOP at NADRA. Then take the updated card and your old passport to a passport office. The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGI&P) issues a fresh passport with the new particulars.

The order is what catches people. Go to the passport office first and you will be sent back. The passport follows the identity card, never the other way round.

We read the DGI&P ordinary passport page on 11 October 2026: its sections on modification, renewal, lost and damaged passports, fees and timelines. NADRA fees come from NADRA's own fee page.

Fix the CNIC first, because the passport follows it

DGI&P says a person who wants to modify name, father's name or date of birth must have the CNIC or NICOP revised first. Only after that can the person visit the passport office with the required documents.

So the real work happens at NADRA. A name change after marriage is covered in updating a CNIC after marriage. A date of birth correction has its own fee ladder, set out in the NADRA date of birth change fee.

NADRA's fee page lists CNIC modification at Rs 400 on the normal 15 day track, Rs 1,150 urgent (12 days) and Rs 2,150 executive (6 days). A Smart CNIC modification is Rs 750, Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,500, in 31, 23 and 9 days. Age modification is charged on top, from Rs 1,000 up to a year of change.

Bring the old passport and the corrected card

DGI&P's general list for adults is the original valid CNIC or NICOP with a photocopy, and the previous passport in original with a photocopy. Government employees also need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their department.

Dual nationals add their foreign passport and a photocopy. If the old passport is lost, bring a police report that carries the previous passport number.

When the age is in doubt, DGI&P says the issuing authority may ask for documentary evidence. That means a birth certificate from a municipality or local body, or a matriculation certificate from a recognised board. Keep these ready. Our birth certificate guide explains how to get one.

  1. Get the CNIC or NICOP corrected and collect the new card.
  2. Gather the old passport, its photocopy, the new card and a photocopy.
  3. Add the birth or matric certificate if the date of birth changed.
  4. Visit the passport office or Pakistan mission and give biometrics.
  5. Pay the fee through the QR code the counter gives you.
  6. Collect the new passport or wait for courier delivery.

Changing all three at once goes to Islamabad for approval

If name, father's name and date of birth are all changing together, DGI&P says the regional office or mission forwards the case to the Directorate General in Islamabad for approval. Expect that to take longer than a single correction.

Single changes are handled by the regional office. DGI&P's page does not give a separate timeline for modification cases, so the normal timelines below are our best guide.

The passport fee applies and the page lists no separate modification fee

DGI&P's page treats a change of particulars as a fresh passport application. We found no separate modification fee, so our reading is that the normal fee schedule for the passport type applies. Confirm with the counter before paying.

For a 36 page machine readable passport, the page lists Rs 4,500 normal and Rs 7,500 urgent for five years, and Rs 6,700 and Rs 11,200 for ten years. An ordinary e-Passport is Rs 9,000 normal for five years and Rs 13,500 for ten. Children under 15 get five years only.

The full schedule, including 72 and 100 page options, is in the official passport fee rates. Check the rule on machine readable passports, which is changing, in the MRP passport end date.

The e-Passport form has name length limits: first name up to 50 characters, last name up to 40 and the relative's name up to 40. A long name may need to be shortened at NADRA first, because the passport copies the card.

Common questions

Can I change my name on my passport without changing my CNIC?

No. DGI&P says you must get the CNIC or NICOP revised first, then apply for the passport modification.

Do I need a new passport or an amendment?

You apply for a new passport. DGI&P's page describes applying for a passport to modify the particulars, and the old one is handled at the office.

Can I renew early when I am changing my details?

Yes. DGI&P says there is no restriction on renewal before expiry, but a statement of the reason may be taken.

What if my date of birth is in doubt?

The office may ask for a municipal birth certificate or a matriculation certificate to settle the age.

What if my old passport is lost?

Bring a police report with the previous passport number. DGI&P says a first loss attracts double fee and a second loss four times the fee.

Is there a helpline?

DGI&P lists 051-111-344-777, Monday to Friday, with SMS status updates from 9988 for applicants who gave a mobile number.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 11 October 2026. We read the DGI&P ordinary passport page and NADRA's fee structure. The DGI&P page shows fees revised in March and May 2024 and shows no later revision, but we cannot see a date of last edit. We did not submit an application.
