Check Vehicles in Pakistan: 39.3 Million Registered, 30.5 Million of Them Motorcycles
Pakistan had 39.3 million registered vehicles in 2025, 30.46 million of them motorcycles. See cars, trucks and tractors, and how local car output rose 51.3%.

Short answer: Pakistan had 39.3 million registered vehicles in 2025, says the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) table in the Economic Survey. Motorcycles are 30.46 million of them and cars, jeeps and station wagons 4.89 million. Local car output rose 51.3 percent in July to March 2025-26.
Look down any road in Pakistan and the count is easy to believe. Bikes in lanes, rickshaws at junctions, a van somewhere in between. The Finance Division's Economic Survey 2025-26 adds numbers to that picture, for the whole fleet and for what local factories made this year.
We opened Chapter 13 on Transport and Chapter 3 on Manufacturing of the Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26 on 14 October 2026. The fleet table is Table 13.3. The factory table is Table 3.9. Shares we worked out are marked "our sum".
Pakistan has 39.3 million registered vehicles, up 5.1 percent in a year
The fleet reached 39,297,497 registered vehicles in calendar 2025, from 37,381,382 in 2024, a rise of 5.1 percent (our sum). In 2011 it was 9.66 million. The count has grown four times in 14 years. These are vehicles on the register, not a count of cars moving on roads today.
| Type | 2024 | 2025 | Share of 2025 (our sum) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorcycles (2 wheels) | 28,852,582 | 30,456,102 | 77.5% |
| Motorcycle rickshaws (3 wheels) | 1,058,536 | 1,087,209 | 2.8% |
| Cars, jeeps and station wagons | 4,674,328 | 4,889,104 | 12.4% |
| Taxis | 174,308 | 175,083 | 0.4% |
| Buses | 262,505 | 265,082 | 0.7% |
| Trucks | 303,782 | 307,659 | 0.8% |
| Others | 2,055,341 | 2,117,258 | 5.4% |
| Total | 37,381,382 | 39,297,497 | 100% |
The Survey does not say who is in "Others". PBS prints the group without a note, and we do not guess. The table also does not say how many of the registered vehicles are still in use.

Motorcycles are nearly four in five vehicles
Motorcycles with two wheels are 77.5 percent of the register (our sum). Add three-wheelers and two- and three-wheelers together are 31.54 million, or 80.3 percent. Cars, jeeps and station wagons are 12.4 percent. Motorcycles grew from 5.78 million in 2011 to 30.46 million in 2025.
That is why a rule on motorcycles reaches more households than any rule on cars. Registration and token rules differ by province. Read how to register a motorcycle in Punjab and what a new car registration costs in Punjab. The Survey table covers the whole country and does not break the fleet down by province.
Taxes are added when you buy or transfer. See the advance tax when you buy or transfer a vehicle. To check a vehicle's details before you pay, use the working verification portal for each province.
Local car production rose 51.3 percent in nine months
Factories built 115,495 cars in July to March 2025-26, against 76,339 a year earlier, a rise of 51.3 percent. Car sales rose 45.5 percent. The Survey links the auto sector's growth to lower inflation, a steadier rupee and a lower policy rate, which cut borrowing costs.
| Vehicle (July to March) | 2024-25 | 2025-26 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cars | 76,339 | 115,495 | +51.3% |
| Light vans, jeeps, SUVs, pickups | 26,177 | 32,465 | +24.0% |
| Trucks | 2,822 | 5,301 | +87.8% |
| Buses | 546 | 704 | +28.9% |
| Two and three wheelers | 1,090,806 | 1,433,074 | +31.4% |
| Tractors | 23,581 | 21,623 | -8.3% |
The Survey credits the figures to the industry's own association, and prints a second PBS table in the transport chapter with different totals. Two sources, two counts. We use the table in the manufacturing chapter because it also states installed capacity. The factory index is covered in Pakistan's factory output for July 2026.

Tractors fell while trucks and buses grew
Tractor output fell 8.3 percent and sales fell 13 percent. The Survey names three causes: farmers waiting for the Punjab tractor subsidy, stalled financing for regular buyers, and higher costs of wartime conditions. Truck output nearly doubled and bus output rose 28.9 percent.
The Survey also says the local heavy vehicle industry runs with about 80 percent of its capacity idle, so most trucks and buses are still imported. If you plan to buy a tractor, compare the subsidy rules first. See which Punjab farm machinery subsidy fits you in 2026-27.
Installed capacity for cars is 341,000 a year. Nine months of output at 115,495 works out to about 45 percent of that on a yearly basis (our sum). That leaves room for output to grow.
Check a vehicle before you buy or register it
A big fleet means a big used market, and papers are where buyers lose money. These steps apply to any car or bike in any province. They take about twenty minutes and cost nothing.
- Write down the registration number, engine number and chassis number from the vehicle itself.
- Compare them with the registration book or smart card.
- Open the provincial verification portal and check the owner and any block or lien.
- Ask the seller for proof that token tax is paid up to date.
- Do the transfer at the excise office in your province and keep the receipt.
Imported cars have separate rules. Read the latest on used car imports and the EDB notification before you pay a dealer for one.

How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked on 14 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read Table 13.3 in Chapter 13 and section 3.3 and Table 3.9 in Chapter 3 of the Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26 on the Finance Division website. Table 13.3 cites PBS, and Table 3.9 cites the industry body. 2025-26 factory figures run from July to March and are provisional. We did not match any figure against provincial excise registers.
