The OPD runs clinics in 19 children's specialties

The hospital's outdoor page lists 19 services, staffed by trained paediatric doctors. They cover medicine, surgery and the senses. Ask at registration which clinic your child needs, as some run on set days.

GroupOPD clinics listed
Children's medicineGeneral Medicine, Cardiology, Neonatology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Neurology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Haematology, Oncology
Development and preventionPreventive Paediatrics, Developmental Paediatrics
Children's surgeryGeneral Surgery, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Urology
OtherENT, Dermatology, Eye, Dentistry

The preventive paediatrics department also runs a growth and development clinic, a nutrition clinic, a genetic clinic, a lactation clinic and a vaccination centre. Vaccines follow the national EPI schedule, and a card is issued. The schedule itself is in the baby vaccination schedule for Pakistan.

On fees, the hospital says only that indoor services are free and outdoor services are provided "as per Government rules". It does not list an OPD slip fee, so bring a little cash in case.

A visit to the OPD in five steps

Bring the parents' CNIC, the child's B-Form if you have it, and any old prescriptions or reports. The emergency registers every child online with a parent's CNIC and mobile number, so expect the same details at OPD.

  1. Call 061-9201431 to 3 to ask which day your child's specialty clinic runs.
  2. Reach the hospital at Fawara Chowk early in the morning.
  3. Register at the counter with a parent's CNIC and mobile number.
  4. Go to the clinic named on your slip and wait for your turn.
  5. Keep the slip for tests, X-rays and the pharmacy.

If your child is very sick, with fits, breathing trouble or heavy diarrhoea, skip the OPD and go to the emergency gate at any hour.

Steps for an OPD visit at Children's Hospital Multan

The emergency sees the sickest child first

A senior staff nurse meets every child at the emergency gate and sorts them by how ill they are. The Casualty Medical Officer then examines the child. A child in a critical state goes straight to the medical, surgical or newborn emergency.

The emergency has a resuscitation room, a high dependency unit for very sick children, and an oral rehydration (ORS) area where mothers are shown how to give ORS by spoon. A separate diarrhoea section treats children with severe dehydration through a drip. Step-down cabins keep a child under watch for 24 hours before discharge or transfer to a ward or ICU.

Surgical cases are first stabilised by the medical emergency team, then handed to the children's surgeons.

Test reports: X-ray in an hour, CT in 24 to 48 hours

The pathology lab runs 24 hours, 7 days, with more than 300 routine and special tests. X-ray reports come within one hour. CT scan reports take 24 to 48 hours, or one to two hours in an emergency, the radiology page says.

TestReport time stated
X-rayWithin 1 hour
CT scan24 to 48 hours; 1 to 2 hours in emergency
Lab testsLab open 24 hours; times vary by test

Radiology also offers ultrasound, colour Doppler, fluoroscopy studies and MRI. The Rehabilitation Services Unit, in the Outdoor building, offers physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, EEG and hearing tests, and a ketogenic diet clinic for hard-to-control epilepsy.

The blood bank supports 576 thalassaemia children

The blood bank, set up in 2007, supplies whole blood, packed cells, platelets and plasma. It says more than 576 thalassaemia patients and over 268 haemophilia patients are registered with it. All donations are screened for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

If your child needs regular transfusions, ask the blood bank about registration. Free transfusion centres run by a charity are listed in Sundas Foundation thalassaemia centres. For the Lahore equivalent of this hospital, see Children's Hospital Lahore.

If you have a complaint about treatment, raise it with the hospital first, then with the regulator, as set out in complaining about a hospital in Punjab.
