To clean leather shoes at home, brush off the dust, wipe with a damp cloth, dry them for a full day away from heat, then apply cream or polish. For suede, use only a dry brush or suede eraser first, and never soak it. Shoe care products in Pakistan cost Rs 104 to Rs 1,800 at brand sites on 7 November 2026.

Winter is hard on shoes in Pakistan. Smog leaves a grey film, morning dew soaks the toe, and mud from an unpaved lane dries hard on the sole. Then people put wet shoes next to a gas heater, and direct heat can crack leather. These steps work for leather, faux leather, suede and sneakers. They are standard shoe care, and we did not run a lab test, so try each product on a hidden spot first.

If your shoes smell after months in a box, the fix for stored winter clothes uses the same airing method.

Six steps to clean leather shoes at home, from brushing to polishing

Clean leather shoes at home in 6 steps

Brush off dry dirt, wipe with a barely damp cloth, clean the sole, stuff with newspaper, dry for 24 hours away from heat, then apply cream or polish and buff. The whole job takes about ten minutes of work, plus the drying.

  1. Take out the laces and insoles. They dry faster on their own, and you reach the tongue of the shoe.
  2. Brush off dry dirt. Use a soft shoe brush or an old soft toothbrush. Brushing wet mud pushes it into the seams, so let it dry first.
  3. Wipe with a damp cloth. Wring it until almost dry. Add a drop of mild soap for marks, and wipe the soap off with a clean damp cloth.
  4. Stuff with newspaper. It takes up the water and holds the shape. Change it once if the shoes were very wet.
  5. Dry for a full day. Choose a shaded airy place. Do not use a heater, hair dryer or direct sun.
  6. Apply cream or polish, then buff. Use a thin coat, wait ten minutes, and rub with a clean cloth until it shines.

Clean suede and nubuck without water

Suede is leather with a soft raised surface, so water leaves marks. Start with a dry suede brush, rub marks with a suede eraser or clean pencil eraser, and treat oil with cornflour left overnight. Use water only as a last resort.

Brush in one direction first to lift the dust, then in the other to lift the nap, which is the soft surface. For a water stain, dampen the whole panel lightly with a clean cloth, not just the stain, and let it dry stuffed with paper. That stops a hard edge from forming.

Nubuck, a smooth version of suede, takes the same care. If a label says faux suede, it is usually polyester. It can take a damp cloth, but read the care line first. The care label symbols chart explains what those marks mean on clothes and some fabric shoes.

Remove smog film, mud and winter marks

Smog film wipes off leather with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Dried mud should be brushed off before any water touches it. White road or wall marks on leather come off with a cloth dipped in water with a little white vinegar.

Sneakers are simpler. Wash fabric uppers with a soft brush and soapy water, and leave out the machine unless the maker allows it. If you are shopping for a new pair, read how to buy original branded sneakers before paying.

Leather and suede care compared: what to use and what to avoid

Shoe care products with prices and pictures

You do not need much. One polish or cream, one cleaner and a brush cover most homes. These eight products were on the brand's own site on 7 November 2026, in stock. We did not test them, so the notes repeat what the maker says.

Bata Shoe Care Cleaning Sponge, Rs 104

Was Rs 149. Bata says to brush off surface dirt and apply evenly to a shine, for smooth surfaces only. Not for suede. The cheapest way to look tidy on a working morning.

Servis Black Liquid Polish, Rs 249

Full price, also in brown, neutral and white. Liquid polish is quick, but it builds up on the leather over time. Use it between proper cream polishing, not in place of it.

Borjan Shoes Renovator, Rs 420

Full price, in black or brown. Borjan says it removes dirt, stains and discolouration from leather, suede and fabric. Test on a hidden spot first, as a black or brown product can stain lighter suede.

Hush Puppies Natural Refresher, Rs 499.50

Half of Rs 999. Hush Puppies says it cleans and deodorises footbeds, the inner part of a shoe that your foot rests on. Useful for sandals and for winter shoes worn with no socks.

Bata Sneaker Shampoo, Rs 559

Was Rs 799. A cleaner with a brush built in. Bata says to apply evenly, scrub gently, and test a small area first, and it calls this great for cleaning outsoles.

Servis Sneaker Shampoo, Rs 699

Full price, and the same idea as Bata's product. Servis gives no directions on the product page, so follow the label on the bottle.

Hush Puppies Leather Lotion, Rs 1,249.50

Half of Rs 2,499. Hush Puppies describes it as a moisturiser that helps stop drying and cracking, and names dry climates. It suits good leather shoes in Quetta or Peshawar during a dry winter.

Ndure Shoe Care Kit, Rs 1,800

Full price for the small kit. Ndure lists wax, a brush, a shiner, a shoe horn, deodorant, polish and a cloth. A larger kit costs Rs 2,399. It is a tidy gift for a man who just bought his first pair of formal shoes.

Store shoes so winter does not undo the work

Shoes last longest when they rest. Leave a day between wears, keep them in a cloth bag and not in plastic, and put a paper or wooden shoe tree inside. Damp stored shoes can grow mould in a closed cupboard.

Before summer, clean every winter pair and dry it fully. Put them away with fresh newspaper and an open air gap. A cupboard next to a kitchen or a bathroom wall holds too much damp, so choose an inside wall.

Common questions

Can I wash leather shoes with water?

Only with a barely damp cloth. Soaking or washing leather shoes under a tap can stiffen and crack them. Dry them for a full day away from heat.

How do I clean suede shoes at home in Pakistan?

Use a dry suede brush first, then a suede eraser or clean pencil eraser for marks. Treat oil with cornflour overnight. Use water only as a last resort.

Can I dry wet shoes near a gas heater?

No. Direct heat dries the natural oil out of leather and can crack it, and it can warp the sole. Stuff with newspaper and leave in shade.

How often should I polish formal shoes?

Once every week or two if you wear them daily. A quick wipe after each wear does more for them than a heavy coat of polish once a month.

Do I need separate products for suede?

Yes. Normal cream or wax will flatten and darken suede. Buy a suede brush, and only use a suede or multi-surface cleaner.
