Results season brings runaways and worse every year in Pakistan. What to say, what not to say, and two helplines we checked ourselves.

Supporting a child who has failed an exam in Pakistan

Every results season in Pakistan, some children run away from home. Some do worse. It happened again this week, after a board result.

Here is the thing worth holding on to. A failed paper is one of the most fixable problems a family will ever face. The exam runs again in October. The year is not lost.

What is not automatically recoverable is what gets said in the first two days.

Say this first

What to say to a child who has failed an exam

If your child has told you themselves, they have already done the hardest part. Start there.

"I am glad you told me." Then "we will sort this out together."

That is it. Those two sentences buy you everything else. The marks can be discussed on Thursday.

AvoidBecause
"What will people say?"It tells them your reputation ranks above their safety
"Your cousin passed."Comparison is the most common trigger in these cases
"After everything we spent on you."It converts a setback into a debt they cannot repay
"You have ruined your life."They may believe you

None of this means pretending the result does not matter. It means separating the result from the child, and doing it out loud.

Two helplines we checked ourselves

Verified mental health helplines in Pakistan

We read both of these on the organisations' own websites on 12 August 2026, rather than copying them from a list.

ServiceNumber
Rozan Counselling Helpline0304-111-1741
Taskeen+92 316 827 5336

Rozan's own description covers emotional and mental health concerns including self harm, and it offers telephone, in person, online and email counselling. Taskeen is a non-profit providing mental health services free of cost.

You do not need to be in crisis to call either. A parent who does not know what to say can call and ask.

If there is immediate danger, call 15, and do not leave the person alone.

One number we are not printing

You will see another helpline recommended widely for exactly this situation. We are leaving it out, and you should know why.

When we checked its official website on 12 August 2026, the domain returned "Account Suspended". That is a hosting problem, and the phone line may well be answering normally. But we could not read the number at source, and every copy of it in circulation comes from third-party sites.

We are not saying that service is unavailable. We are saying we could not verify it, and this is the one article on this site where we are least willing to guess. Sending a frightened teenager to a number that does not answer is worse than giving them one fewer option.

Now the practical part

Practical next steps after failing a board exam in Punjab

Most of the panic in these situations comes from a belief that the year is gone. Usually it is not.

  1. Failing a paper is not repeating the year. You sit the papers you failed, not the whole exam.
  2. Punjab's second annual examination begins 6 October 2026.
  3. Forms close 19 August at the single fee. After that it doubles, then triples, then closes on 29 August.
  4. Read the result statement properly to confirm which papers actually failed, rather than going by what somebody said on the phone.
  5. If a grade looks wrong, apply for rechecking now. That window is short and runs from the result date.

The full schedule, fees and process are in our guide to the Punjab matric second annual exam. Telling your child there is a date in October, and that you have already looked it up, is itself a form of reassurance.

What to watch for over the next fortnight

Most young people are upset for a few days and then adjust. Some do not, and it is worth knowing what the difference looks like.

Pay attention if the withdrawal continues past a week or two, if they stop eating or sleeping normally, if they will not leave their room, if they give away things that matter to them, or if they talk about being a burden or about not being here.

If any of that appears, call one of the numbers above rather than waiting to see. Asking a young person directly whether they are thinking of hurting themselves does not put the idea in their head, and it is often a relief to be asked.

We are not qualified to tell you how to treat anything, and this article does not try. Its purpose is to tell you the situation is fixable and where to get proper help.

For students reading this

If you are the one who failed, a few things worth knowing.

You are allowed to be upset. It is a real disappointment and pretending otherwise helps nobody.

But a supplementary pass carries the same certificate. Employers do not ask which sitting you passed in. The practical cost is a few months of timing, which is set out in our guide on what to choose after your result.

And if home is not a safe place to have this conversation, the helplines above are for you as much as for your parents. You can call them yourself, and it is free and confidential.

Questions readers are asking

My child failed a paper, what should I do first?

Say that you are glad they told you and that you will sort it out together. Deal with the marks later. The resit is in October, so nothing is lost in the first 48 hours except goodwill.

Is there a free mental health helpline in Pakistan?

Yes. Rozan Counselling Helpline on 0304-111-1741 and Taskeen on +92 316 827 5336, both read on their own websites on 12 August 2026. Taskeen states its services are free of cost.

Does failing mean repeating the whole year?

No. You sit the failed papers again in the second annual examination, which begins 6 October 2026 in Punjab.

When do resit forms close?

19 August 2026 at the single fee, 25 August at double and 29 August at triple.

What if my child will not talk to me?

Do not force it. Say the door is open, keep them fed and around people, and call a counselling helpline yourself for advice on how to approach it.

Is it harmful to ask directly about self harm?

Asking does not plant the idea. It is often a relief to be asked. If the answer worries you, call a helpline or, in immediate danger, 15.

Does a supplementary pass look worse?

You get the same certificate. The practical difference is timing, because most colleges admit on the annual result.
