A green apple and a stack of plain paper on a dark wooden table, for a guide on improving FBISE marks

Short answer: A student who has passed FBISE SSC or HSSC can sit papers again to improve marks. The fee on the board's challan page is Rs 2,700 for SSC and Rs 3,000 for HSSC. Only the better mark counts, and the old result card stays valid. The FBISE rules give two time limits, so confirm yours.

A student in Islamabad passed HSSC with 62 per cent. Her target university wants 65. She can sit the Physics paper again and keep whichever mark is higher. The Federal Board has written rules for this, and they decide who can apply, how long you have and what you pay.

We read rules 1.11, 1.12, 1.13 and 1.16 of the FBISE General Rules for Examination, and the board's fee challan page, on 13 October 2026. This applies to students who passed under the Federal Board. Students who passed under another board are not covered.

Only FBISE passed candidates can improve with FBISE

Rule 1.13 (c) says the chance to improve marks is not given to candidates who passed their Secondary or Higher Secondary exam from a board other than the Federal Board. If you passed with a provincial board, you must go back to that board.

A student who has passed SSC-II or HSSC-II can reappear as an ex-candidate in the current course. A student who is already a regular candidate in Part I can improve Part I papers too. The examination is held in the annual exam or in the second annual exam, which is open to students who already passed.

FBISE improvement of marks: who can apply, fee and which papers

The rules give two time limits, so confirm yours

Rule 1.13 (a) says a passed candidate has four years from passing, and before getting a higher qualification, to take the improvement chance. Rule 1.13 (d) says improvement by reappearing is allowed within one year of passing. The two lines do not match.

We cannot tell from the rules alone which period FBISE applies today. A safe approach is to apply in the first available exam within one year of your result. If you are later than that, ask the board in writing before paying, and keep the reply. Do not pay on the assumption that four years apply.

If a candidate sends an admission form for improvement and does not use the chance, the rule allows the next chance, within the same time limit.

Better marks count, and you keep the old result card

Each theory paper is treated by itself. If the new mark is higher, the better mark is granted. If the new mark is lower, the earlier mark stays. A candidate who is absent keeps the earlier mark too.

When the result improves, FBISE issues a result card showing the improved marks. You do not have to hand back your old result card. The board lists an "improved certificate" form among its services for the final document, so keep your old and new cards together.

A subject with practical needs care. If you sit all papers of a subject that has a practical, you must also sit the practical. If you sit only one paper of the subject, you neither need to nor can appear in the practical.

How FBISE treats better and lower marks when you improve a result

Improvement does not carry ordinary grace marks

Rule 1.10 (m) says no grace marks are given to improvement candidates. The exception is the hardship rule: a candidate who loses a better division or subject for want of one to five marks gets those marks automatically.

Plan on the marks you can earn. Pay the full fee, because the rule says the improvement fee cannot be refunded. The fee for an improvement candidate is the same as the examination fee on the challan page: Rs 2,700 for SSC and Rs 3,000 for HSSC in Pakistan.

For papers of Part I, a passed candidate can sit any number of papers with Part II. The candidate keeps the previous result if the new marks are not better. Regular candidates must apply through their institution with the fee.

An additional subject is a different route

  1. Confirm you passed from the Federal Board.
  2. Choose the papers and check the practical rule.
  3. Ask FBISE in writing if you passed over a year ago.
  4. Submit the form and pay the fee before the last date.
Four steps to prepare to improve FBISE marks

Rule 1.16 lets a passed candidate sit a subject that was not offered before. This gives a separate certificate of additional subjects only. It has no effect on the grade, so it does not count as improvement.

A candidate may use two attempts to pass or improve an additional subject. A subject with a practical needs proof that the practical was done. This route suits students who need one more subject for a university.

To check dates, see the pages on the FBISE second annual exam and the matric second annual date sheet. If your goal is admission, compare university cut offs in the guide to the university admission calendar. For a lost card, use the duplicate certificate and mark sheet route.

Common questions

Can I improve my FBISE marks after passing?

Yes. A student who passed SSC or HSSC from the Federal Board can sit papers again in the annual or second annual exam to improve marks.

How much does FBISE improvement cost?

The FBISE challan page lists Rs 2,700 for SSC and Rs 3,000 for HSSC in Pakistan, and 120 and 130 dollars abroad. The fee is not refundable.

What happens if my new marks are lower?

Your earlier marks stay. FBISE grants better marks, paper by paper, and keeps the previous result when the new one is not higher.

Can I improve if I passed from the Lahore board?

No. The rules say FBISE gives the improvement chance only to those who passed from the Federal Board.

How long do I have to improve?

The rules say four years in one place and one year in another. Apply within one year, and ask the board in writing if you are later.

Does an additional subject count as improvement?

No. It earns a separate certificate and has no effect on your grade or marks.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 13 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read the FBISE General Rules for Examination, the board's fee challan page and its services page. The challan page is undated, so check it again before paying. We could not confirm which time limit applies, one year or four years.
