Short answer: Best Asian Pop Music Performance is a new Grammy category for 2027. It is for vocal singles and tracks in contemporary Asian pop with meaningful use of an Asian language. The Academy names K-pop, J-pop and C-pop as examples, but says the list is not limited to them. It does not name Pakistani pop.

The Recording Academy added five new categories for the 2027 Grammys, and this is the one that matters most to fans of Asian music. Pakistani listeners have asked whether Urdu or Punjabi pop could ever be nominated in it. The honest answer is that the rules leave the door open, but the Academy decides each case.

We read the Academy's page for the category, its list of rule changes for 2027 and its nominations page on 17 October 2026. Below is what the rules say, and what they do not say.

The category is for singles and tracks, vocal only

The Academy lists Best Asian Pop Music Performance as a category for singles or tracks, vocal only. The nominees are the artists, and the Grammy statuettes go to the artists. It is not an album award and it is not a songwriting award. It rewards a performance of one recording.

The Academy describes Asian pop as a distinct and globally recognised form of popular music. It says eligible recordings usually have melody-driven writing, mainstream pop songwriting and commercially oriented production. They may mix in related styles, such as pop-rock and pop R&B. It also notes that the arrangements often blend genres and change shape quickly.

Key rules of the new Grammy category Best Asian Pop Music Performance

A song needs meaningful use of an Asian language

The rule says a recording must feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. The language has to play a significant role, so that the recording is identifiable with it. A song sung entirely in an Asian language is eligible. A song sung entirely in English is not.

Isolated words, ad-libs and short phrases do not count. This matters for Pakistani pop, where many songs move between Urdu, Punjabi and English. A song that is mostly Urdu with a few English lines would fit the wording. A song with one Urdu word in an English chorus would not.

Song typeFits the language rule?
Fully in an Asian languageYes
Mixed, with the Asian language playing a significant roleYes
Fully in EnglishNo, but eligible in other categories
English with isolated words or ad-libs in an Asian languageNo

Style decides eligibility, not the singer's nationality

The Academy says the musical style is determinative of eligibility, not the ethnicity or nationality of the performers. So a Pakistani singer is not shut out because of where they are from, and a singer from an Asian country is not let in because of it. The song has to be Asian pop in style.

The category text says eligible music originates from or is widely recognised within Asian markets. Pakistan is in Asia, and Urdu and Punjabi are Asian languages. But the Academy names only K-pop, J-pop and C-pop as examples, and it does not say whether South Asian pop fits. We do not claim that it does.

The page also says other popular forms that come from Asia or the Asian diaspora, but do not meet the genre test, can be entered in other categories. A Pakistani song in a different style, for example a ghazal or a rap track, would be placed elsewhere.

Only one version of a song is eligible in a performance category

The Academy allows only one version of a recording in a performance category in any year. If a song is entered in another performance category, it cannot also be entered in this one as a different version with an Asian language. This stops a label from using one hit twice.

For a Pakistani artist, this means a label has to choose. A bilingual remix of a hit cannot go into this category if the original is already in another one. The label would make that choice at the entry stage. We explain who can enter in how a Pakistani song gets a Grammy nomination.

The 2027 entry window has closed, so this is about next year

The entry window for the 2027 Grammys closed on 21 August 2026, and the eligibility period ended on 28 August 2026. A song that was not entered cannot be nominated in this category for 2027. The nominees are announced on 16 November.

  1. Check that the song is a vocal single or track.
  2. Check that an Asian language plays a significant role.
  3. Ask the label whether it is entered in another performance category.
  4. Watch Grammy.com for the next season's entry dates.
