How a Pakistani Song Gets a Grammy Nomination: Who Can Enter and Who Votes

Short answer: A song cannot nominate itself for a Grammy. Only members of the Recording Academy and registered media companies can enter a recording, and only Voting Members of the Academy choose the nominees. For the 2027 Grammys the entry window closed on 21 August 2026, so no new entry is possible this year.

Every season, a Pakistani song trends with the words "Grammy" or "in contention" next to it. Fans then ask a fair question: how does a song from Pakistan actually reach the Grammy ballot? The answer is a fixed process with a few firm rules, and all of them are on the Recording Academy's own pages.

We read the Academy's submission guide, its voting guide and its nominations page on 17 October 2026. This guide explains the steps in plain words. It does not say whether any named Pakistani song was entered, because the Academy does not publish its entry list.

Only Academy members and registered media companies can enter

The Academy says that only registered media companies and Recording Academy members, both Voting and Professional, can make submissions for Grammy consideration. An artist who is neither cannot press a button and enter a song. Someone with standing has to do it for them.

In practice, that someone is usually a record label, a distributor or a music company that is registered as a media company. The Academy defines a media company as a real business whose main work is to create, collect and promote audio or video for commercial purposes. It must also have verifiable product in national United States commercial distribution on the Academy's approved streaming platforms within the eligibility period.

That last test matters for Pakistani music. A song that is only on local platforms, or only on YouTube, may not meet the media company test by itself. The Academy does not list the approved platforms in the pages we read, so check its resource documents before you rely on any one service.

The entry window for the 2027 Grammys is closed

Media company registration for the 2027 Grammys closed on Friday 14 August 2026. The online entry period ran from Tuesday 7 July to Friday 21 August 2026, ending at 6 pm Pacific time. In Pakistan that was 6 am on Saturday 22 August. The Academy says there is only one round of entries.

The Academy states the rule in bold: if a recording or work is not formally submitted, it cannot be considered for a Grammy or a nomination and will not appear on a ballot. There is no late entry and no appeal that we could find. The next entry window has not been published on the pages we read.

A song must be released within the eligibility period

For the 2027 Grammys, a recording had to be released between Sunday 31 August 2025 and Friday 28 August 2026. It must be on sale to the public through general distribution inside that window, and it must stay available at least until the final ballot closes. A song released after 28 August 2026 is for next year.

The entry period closes one week before the eligibility period ends. A song released on 28 August 2026 still had to be entered by 21 August. The Academy says this directly, so a late August release was entered before it came out.

Bold claims about a song "qualifying" often skip these dates. A song that came out in 2024, or after 28 August 2026, was not in the 2027 window.

Every entry is checked by hand and placed in a category

The Academy says it can receive more than 20,000 eligible entries in a season. Its Awards staff check each entry by hand for eligibility. Screening committees then make sure each one sits in the right category. They do not judge whether the music is good or bad.

Submitters can add an Artist Intent statement. This is a short note that explains why a work was entered in a certain category or genre. The Academy says staff and screening committees can take it into account.

For Pakistani artists, the category question is real. A song that mixes Urdu, Punjabi and English pop, for instance, has to be placed somewhere. The new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category may fit some of them, and we explain its wording in our guide to that category.

Only Voting Members choose the nominees and the winners

Voting Members decide the nominees in first round voting and the winners in final round voting. The Academy says registered media companies, Professional Members and Grammy U Members cannot vote in either round. Fans cannot vote at all.

How to check a Grammy claim about a Pakistani song

A claim that a song is "in contention" for a Grammy cannot be checked before the nominations. The Academy keeps the ballot private, and it publishes no entry list. Until 16 November, treat the claim as unconfirmed. After that date, the nominee list on Grammy.com is the only list that counts.

We looked for a Recording Academy page naming Hasan Raheem or any other Pakistani song on the 2027 ballot. We did not find one. That does not mean no Pakistani song was entered. It means no official page lets a reader confirm it.
