Check Your Green Line Fare: Pakistan Railways Charges From the Start of Your Seat Quota

Pakistan Railways prices Green Line tickets from the start of the seat quota, not your boarding station. See the Rohri example, other trains and how to check.

Short answer: On Pakistan Railways, the Green Line fare is quota based. If you board at Rohri for Karachi but the free seat starts at Rawalpindi, you pay the Rawalpindi to Karachi fare. Economy and most other AC trains charge differently, so check which stations your seat is quoted between before you pay.

A family boards at Rohri and wants to reach Karachi. The only Green Line seats left were sold as one block from Rawalpindi to Karachi. The family pays for the whole block, though they use the last part of it. This is not a mistake at the counter. It is a written rule.

We read the Terms and Conditions page of Pakistan Railways on 12 October 2026. It states the Green Line rule and gives this exact Rohri and Rawalpindi example. Below is what the rule means, how it differs from other trains, and how to avoid paying for kilometres you do not travel.

Green Line sells seats in blocks called quotas

A quota is a block of seats set aside for a stretch of the route. Pakistan Railways says Green Line fare is quota based. You are charged from the start of the free seat's quota to your destination, not from the station where you step on.

The terms give the example in plain words. Travel from Rohri to Karachi with the seat available only from Rawalpindi to Karachi, and the fare is charged from Rawalpindi to Karachi, not from Rohri to Karachi.

The reason is that a seat is one unit of stock. Once a seat is sold from Rawalpindi, it cannot be sold again for the earlier part of the trip. So the system prices the whole block.

Other trains charge from your own station

On most other AC classes, the terms say the ticket is reserved and priced from the station you travel from to the station you travel to. Economy is different again: it is priced from the start of the seat's quota station to your ending station.

Ticket typeWhere the fare is counted from
Green Line, any classStart of the free seat's quota to your destination
AC class on other trainsThe station you board at to your destination
Economy on other trainsStart of the seat's quota station to your destination

Read that last row with care. Economy on a non-Green Line train also follows the quota start. So the surprise is not only a Green Line problem. It is most likely there, because Green Line is the train people book late.

Where the fare is counted from on Green Line, AC and economy tickets

Green Line fares are already the highest on the route

On the Karachi to Lahore route, Green Line economy costs Rs 5,600 against Rs 3,750 on Awam Express, Allama Iqbal and Khyber Mail. We ran that search on 27 September 2026, and it is set out in our Pakistan Railways fare check.

That premium is paid for speed. Green Line is the fastest train on that route at 16 hours 35 minutes. But a quota fare can add the cost of stretches you never ride, so the headline price is not always the price you pay.

Green Line also allows almost no concessions. The same fare page notes that the senior citizen discount does not apply on Green Line, and only military vouchers and warrants are accepted. Children aged 3 to under 10 pay half fare under the terms.

How to check the fare you will really pay

Search your exact boarding station, your destination and the date on the booking site, then compare the price shown for your journey with a search that starts at the quota's first station. If the two prices match, the quota is shaping your fare.

  1. Open the Pakistan Railways booking site or the Rabta app and search your exact boarding and destination stations.
  2. Note the price of every class on the Green Line card.
  3. Search again from the first big station on the line, for example Rawalpindi for a northern run.
  4. If the second price equals the first, the quota start decides your fare.
  5. Check a non-Green Line train for the same date. Compare the price and the travel time.
Five steps to check whether a Green Line quota sets your fare

We have not run this exact test for Rohri, so we cannot say what price you will see. The steps are the way to find out for your own journey. The step by step booking flow is in our page on how to book train tickets online.

The rule also protects you when the air conditioning fails

If the AC fails during the journey, Pakistan Railways says the difference between the AC fare and the economy fare is calculated and refunded, if the guard issues a certificate numbered CM-109. Ask for that certificate on the train, not afterwards.

Refunds in other cases follow the cancellation bands. Cancelling inside the last 24 hours costs 30 per cent of what you paid, which is why a quota fare you cannot reduce matters. Our page on how to cancel a Pakistan Railways e-ticket sets out the full scale.

Common questions

Why is my Green Line fare higher than the distance I travel?

Green Line fare is quota based. You are charged from the start of the free seat's quota to your destination, which can be farther back than your boarding station.

Does the quota rule apply to other trains too?

Economy tickets on other trains are also priced from the start of the seat's quota station. AC classes on other trains are priced from your own station.

Can I avoid paying for the extra stretch?

Not on the same seat. You can check another train, another date, or another class where the quota starts closer to your station.

Is a children's fare available on Green Line?

The terms give half fare to children aged 3 to 10 years. A concession table on the same site lists Green Line as having almost no concessions, so confirm at booking.

Which page states this rule?

The Terms and Conditions page of Pakistan Railways states the Green Line quota rule and gives the Rohri and Rawalpindi example.

What if the AC stops working on the train?

Ask the guard for a CM-109 certificate. Pakistan Railways says the fare difference between AC and economy is then refunded.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read the Terms and Conditions of Pakistan Railways on 12 October 2026. The Green Line fare figures come from our own fare search of 27 September 2026. We did not test a Rohri to Karachi search. Fares change when Pakistan Railways revises them, so check the booking site before you pay.
