Five shares that cost the KSE-100 the most points on 12 October 2026

Gains were small and came from consumer names. Colgate-Palmolive rose 1.71 per cent and added 16.08 points. Pakistan Tobacco rose 1.60 per cent and added 9.99 points. JDW Sugar Mills had the best percentage gain, 2.09 per cent, on only 167 shares traded.

Bank shares cost the index 734 points on their own

The 14 banks in the KSE-100 together cost 734.42 points, which is 37.4 per cent of the day's fall. Only Standard Chartered rose. Banks carry a large weight in the index, so a bad day for banks is a bad day for the index.

The index now sits about 13.6 per cent below its 52-week high of 191,032.73 and about 14.6 per cent above its 52-week low of 144,119.44. The fall on 5 October was larger, at 2,288 points, and the index recovered it the next day.

No official reason for the fall has been published

PSX, the SECP and the State Bank of Pakistan did not issue a statement about Monday's session that we could find. Broker views on the reasons are opinion, so we do not repeat them. What the data shows is that the fall was wide and bank-heavy.

Two dates are worth knowing, though neither is a reason. The next monetary policy meeting is on 26 October. The State Bank's T-bill auction calendar has an auction on 14 October.

What a 1.18 per cent fall means for your savings

If you hold shares or a share fund worth Rs 100,000 that move with the index, Monday took about Rs 1,180 off their value on paper. Since the close of 2 October, the same holding lost about Rs 1,800. You lose nothing until you sell.

  1. Look at how much of your money sits in bank shares. Banks caused over a third of Monday's fall.
  2. Check if a share you own went ex-dividend. A fall on that day is normal.
  3. Ask when you need the money. Savings for fees or rent due soon are safer outside shares.
  4. Compare the loss with your plan, not with the headline number of points.
  5. Check each day's movers yourself on the PSX data portal.

If you are new to the exchange, the steps to start investing on the PSX explain the broker, the account and the risks. A 1.18 per cent daily fall is well short of a market-wide halt, which the PSX circuit breaker rules reserve for swings of about 5 per cent as reported.
