PTA Tax on 5G Phones in Pakistan: What You Will Pay

PTA tax can cost more than the phone. How registration works on 5G handsets, passport versus CNIC, and when importing stops paying off.

PTA tax on 5G phones in Pakistan

Somebody brings a 5G flagship back from Dubai, thrilled at what they saved. Sixty days later the phone drops off every network in Pakistan, and the bill to bring it back costs more than the handset did. This happens constantly and it is entirely avoidable.

PTA tax on 5G phones works the same way it does on any other handset, through the DIRBS device registration system. What changes with 5G is the price bracket: these are newer, more expensive devices, and the tax scales with value.

Even the regulator thinks it has gone far. In July 2026 the PTA chairman publicly said a 60 percent tax on phones is too high, which is an unusual thing for a regulator to say about its own regime.

How does PTA tax on phones actually work?

Every handset used on a Pakistani network must be registered with PTA's DIRBS system. Phones bought locally arrive already registered. Phones brought in from abroad must be registered within a set window, and the tax is paid at that point.

Miss the window and the IMEI is blocked. The phone still switches on, still uses Wi-Fi, and cannot make a call on any network in the country.

What is the difference between passport and CNIC registration?

Passport registration is cheaper and is meant for travellers bringing in a device they will personally use. It allows 30 days from arrival and is limited to one device per passport in a 12 month period. CNIC registration allows 60 days and costs considerably more.

For anyone buying locally rather than travelling, CNIC is the only route available, and that is the expensive one.

The gap between the two on a flagship is large enough to change the buying decision entirely. Our worked example on the Pixel 6 Pro price in Pakistan shows a case where the CNIC tax exceeded the phone's market value.

How do you check the tax on a specific 5G phone?

Use PTA's own calculator rather than a figure from a shop or a forum. Rates are tied to device value and change with policy, so anything you read second hand carries a real chance of being out of date.

  1. Get the exact model number from Settings, About phone.
  2. Open PTA's DIRBS portal and use the tax estimation tool.
  3. Compare the total against the local PTA approved price of the same phone.
  4. If the imported total is higher, buy locally. It usually is.

Our walkthrough of the PTA tax calculator covers the tool step by step, and the tax reduction discussion tracks where policy may be heading.

How do you check if a phone is already registered?

Dial *#06# to get the 15 digit IMEI, then send it in an SMS to 8484. PTA replies within a minute telling you whether the device is compliant, non-compliant or blocked. The check is free and costs only a standard SMS.

Dial star hash 06 hash for IMEI then text 8484 to check PTA status
Do this before paying for any used or imported handset.

Do it yourself on your own phone. Do not accept an IMEI read aloud, written on paper, or shown as a screenshot. Our full guide on checking an IMEI number in Pakistan explains how to read each reply.

Is it ever worth importing a 5G phone?

Rarely, and it gets rarer as local assembly expands. Locally manufactured 5G devices passed 961,326 units by May 2026, which means many of the phones people used to import are now built here and arrive tax paid.

Importing can still make sense in two narrow cases: a model with no local presence at all, or a traveller registering one device on a passport where the lower rate applies.

Outside those, the arithmetic is brutal. Add the registration tax to the purchase price and compare against the PTA approved local price. Our guide to the cheapest 5G phones in Pakistan covers why locally assembled handsets usually win that comparison.

What happens if you do not pay?

The IMEI is blocked and the handset loses access to every Pakistani network. It is not a fine or a warning. The device simply stops working as a phone until it is registered and the tax is paid.

A blocked phone behaves in a way that catches buyers out. It shows signal bars, browses happily on Wi-Fi, and passes every casual inspection in a shop. Only inserting a working SIM and placing a call reveals it.

Blocking is reversible. Register the device and pay the applicable tax, and network access returns to the same IMEI once payment clears.

Frequently asked questions about PTA tax on 5G phones

How much is PTA tax on a 5G phone?

It depends on the device's value and whether you register on a passport or a CNIC. Use PTA's own calculator for your exact model, since rates change.

How long do I have to register a phone with PTA?

Thirty days from arrival if registering on a passport, sixty days on a CNIC. After that the IMEI is blocked.

Is passport registration cheaper than CNIC?

Yes, noticeably. It is limited to one device per passport in a twelve month period and is intended for travellers bringing in their own handset.

Can I use a phone without paying PTA tax?

Only until the grace period ends, and only on Wi-Fi after that. A blocked handset cannot connect to any Pakistani mobile network.

Is PTA tax higher on 5G phones?

Not because they are 5G. The tax scales with device value, and 5G handsets tend to sit in higher price brackets, which is why the bills look bigger.

Can a blocked phone be unblocked?

Yes. Register it through the DIRBS portal and pay the tax. Access is restored to the same IMEI once the payment clears.

Will PTA tax on phones come down?

The PTA chairman said in July 2026 that a 60 percent tax on phones is too high, but no reduction has been enacted. Treat current rates as what you will actually pay.
