Short answer: Sri Lanka have 2 points after beating England by 2 wickets on 22 October 2026. A win over Pakistan on 27 October puts them in the 31 October final unless England win both of their remaining matches. Beating both Pakistan and England makes it certain.

Sri Lanka lost to Pakistan by 37 runs on 18 October, then chased 430 against England at Rawalpindi. They have two league matches left, both in Lahore. These scenarios are our own sums from the results and the fixture list, with 2 points a win assumed because the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) conditions page was not readable for us.

A win over Pakistan almost secures the final for Sri Lanka

If Sri Lanka beat Pakistan on 27 October they reach 4 points. They then miss the final only if England beat Pakistan on 25 October and England beat Sri Lanka on 29 October. In that case three teams finish on 4.

The last two rows need a note. If Pakistan beat Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka beat England, Sri Lanka have 4 and the others share the rest. We checked each case by adding the points. The table is our arithmetic, not an official one.

Losing to Pakistan keeps a small chance alive

If Sri Lanka lose on 27 October, they are on 2 points with one match left. A win over England on 29 October gives them 4. Pakistan would then be on 6 if they also beat England, so Sri Lanka go through only in some results.

The clean case is England beating Pakistan on 25 October and Pakistan beating Sri Lanka on 27 October, then Sri Lanka beating England. Pakistan 6, Sri Lanka 4, England 2. Sri Lanka go second.

Net run rate puts Sri Lanka ahead of England

Sri Lanka's run rate is about minus 0.35 by our sums, ahead of England's minus 0.89. Their chase of 430 in 49.5 overs helped. See the points table after 22 October.

Net run rate: Pakistan plus 1.24, Sri Lanka minus 0.35, England minus 0.89

Run rate only matters if teams are level on points. The method is in our page on how net run rate works.

The chase that changed their tournament

Rathnayake scored 130, Avishka Fernando 97, Shanaka 97 and Liyanage 61 not out. The innings are told in our reports on the 430 chase and on Rathnayake's 130. Pakistan's bowlers will have studied them.

Sri Lanka's clearest route to the final: beat Pakistan, beat England, reach 6 points
  1. Sri Lanka face Pakistan at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, 27 October.
  2. They face England at the same ground on Thursday, 29 October.
  3. Both matches start at 1 pm Pakistan time.
  4. The final is on Saturday, 31 October.

The Pakistan match decides most of it

Out of eight possible result combinations for the last three matches, Sri Lanka reach the final on points alone in five. In two more they depend on net run rate, and in one they go out. That count is ours, and it assumes 2 points a win and no ties or washouts.

Rain is the one thing the count leaves out. If a match is abandoned, points may be shared and every sum changes. Our page on how the DLS target works, linked in the questions below, explains what happens in a rain interrupted match, although the board's own playing conditions for this series would apply.

Sri Lanka's last meeting with Pakistan, at Rawalpindi, ended in a 37 run defeat. Pakistan made 305 and Sri Lanka 268. The Lahore match on 27 October is at a different ground, Gaddafi Stadium, so the pitch will be new to both sides.

Rathnayake and Shanaka both scored well against England, and the batting order has shown it can chase large totals. Whether the bowlers can hold Pakistan is the question for 27 October. We do not predict it.

What the table cannot tell you

These sums treat every match as a win or a loss with 2 points. If the board uses a different rule, or if rain ends a match without a result, the numbers change. We have said where we could not read the board's rules. Check its page before you rely on any scenario here.

Common questions

How many points does Sri Lanka have?

2, from one win in two matches.

What does Sri Lanka need for the final?

Beating Pakistan on 27 October and England on 29 October makes it certain.

Can Sri Lanka still be knocked out?

Yes, if they lose both matches or if England win both and the run rate goes against them.

When do they play next?

Pakistan, on Tuesday 27 October in Lahore.

Who did Sri Lanka lose to?

Pakistan, by 37 runs, on 18 October. See the opener report.

What if rain stops a match?

The board's playing conditions apply. See how the DLS target is set in a rain interrupted ODI.

Are these scenarios official?

No. They are our arithmetic.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

On 22 October 2026 we read the ICC story on the chase and a full match report, plus our fixture list from pcb.com.pk. We could not read the playing conditions, so 2 points a win and the tie-break order are assumptions. The scenarios and run rates are our arithmetic.
