Stop SIM Swap Fraud in Pakistan: Signs, and What to Do in the First 30 Minutes
Signs of a SIM swap in Pakistan and what to do in the first 30 minutes: block the number free, freeze bank and wallet apps, replace the SIM and report to NCCIA.

If your phone suddenly shows no service and SMS stop arriving, treat it as a possible SIM swap. From another phone, call your network and block the number at once. On Jazz, dial *8822# or call 111 from any Jazz number; blocking is free and immediate. Then call your bank and wallet helplines to freeze digital banking before the fraudster uses your OTPs.
A SIM swap is when someone gets a replacement SIM issued for your number. Your SIM goes dead. Theirs starts receiving your calls, your SMS and every one-time code your bank sends. Your passwords did not leak. Your number did.
In Pakistan a replacement SIM needs a fingerprint check. Jazz's own help page says the customer's presence and fingerprint verification are required, and the new SIM is active immediately after. That makes swaps harder here than in many countries, but not impossible. The NCCIA's arrest of a bank manager for selling NADRA Verisys records on 10 October 2026 is a reminder that identity data does leak from inside the system.
A SIM swap moves your number to a fraudster's SIM
Your phone number is the key to most of your money. Bank apps, JazzCash, Easypaisa, WhatsApp and Gmail all send codes to it. Whoever holds the number can reset passwords and approve transfers.
Fraudsters get a replacement SIM in three main ways. They trick or bribe someone at a retailer. They use stolen identity data and a fake or misused fingerprint. Or they talk you into a "SIM re-verification" over the phone and walk you through steps that hand over your number. Banking app fraud often starts this way, which is why reporting fraud on your bank's mobile app also tells you to check your SIM first.
Speed matters more than anything else. Every hour the fraudster holds your number is an hour of OTPs.
Five signs your SIM may have been swapped
One sign alone can be a network fault. Two together, especially at night or on a weekend, should make you act.
- Your phone shows "No service" or "Emergency calls only" while people near you on the same network have signal.
- Calls and SMS stop arriving, even from family.
- You get an email alert for a login, password reset or transfer you did not make.
- A wallet or bank app logs you out and will not accept your PIN.
- Someone tells you they called you and a stranger answered.
Restart the phone once. If it still has no service and other phones on your network work, stop waiting and start blocking.

The first 30 minutes: block the number, then freeze your money
Use a family member's phone. Your own phone cannot help you now.
- Block the number with your network. On Jazz, dial *8822# from any Jazz number and follow the steps, or call 111. Jazz says this is free and works immediately. For Zong, Telenor and Ufone, use the routes in blocking a lost or stolen SIM.
- Call your bank's helpline. Ask them to block internet banking, the app and your cards, and get a complaint number before you hang up.
- Call your wallet providers (JazzCash, Easypaisa or any other) and ask for the wallet to be blocked.
- Change your email password from a computer, because email is the second route into most accounts.
- Get a replacement SIM in person. Go to the operator's franchise with your original CNIC. On Jazz, a replacement costs Rs 550 and is active right after fingerprint verification.
- Report to the NCCIA with screenshots, times and the complaint numbers you collected.
Do not skip the bank call because the SIM is blocked. Blocking stops new codes. It does not reverse transfers already made. Banks have set timelines once you complain, listed in your bank's deadline to answer a fraud complaint.

What Jazz's own rules say about replacement and blocking
We read Jazz's help page on 10 October 2026. It is the most complete operator page we could open, so the figures below are Jazz's. Other networks follow the same NADRA fingerprint process but publish fewer details.
| Action on Jazz | How | Charge | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block a stolen number | *8822# or 111 from any Jazz number | Free | Immediate |
| Restore it later | *8822# or 111 | Free | Immediate |
| Replacement SIM | Franchise or retailer, you present, fingerprint | Rs 550 | Immediate after verification |
| eSIM | Franchise, fingerprint | Rs 1,500 | Immediate after QR scan |
Two more rules are worth knowing. Jazz will not process a change of ownership on a number that had a duplicate SIM, a new SIM or a network port in the last 30 days. That slows down a fraudster who swaps a SIM and then tries to take the number over completely. And Zong's terms, which follow PTA's conditions, say you must ask the operator to block a lost or stolen SIM within 24 hours, or you are not cleared of liability for crimes committed with it.
Make a swap harder before it happens
None of this takes long, and it shrinks what a fraudster can do even if a swap succeeds.
- Put a PIN on your SIM. The steps are in locking your SIM with a PIN.
- Count the SIMs on your CNIC every few months and block any you did not buy.
- Move WhatsApp and Gmail away from SMS codes. A passkey or app-based two-step check does not depend on your SIM.
- Turn on email alerts from your bank, so you hear about transfers even when your SIM is dead.
- Never send CNIC photos or fingerprints to strangers, and never accept a "re-verification" call. Your operator does not call to verify your SIM.
The one we would do tonight is the bank email alert. In a real swap, the SMS that warns you goes straight to the fraudster.
Common questions
How do I know if my SIM has been swapped?
Your phone loses service while others on your network have signal, and calls and SMS stop. If you also see login or transfer alerts by email, assume a swap and block the number.
How do I block my Jazz number quickly?
Dial *8822# from any Jazz number, or call 111. Jazz says it is free and immediate. You can restore the number the same way later.
Can someone get a duplicate SIM without my fingerprint?
They should not be able to. Replacement needs the owner present with fingerprint verification. Fraud happens when that check is bypassed by an insider or misused identity data.
Will blocking the SIM get my money back?
No. Blocking stops new OTPs. To recover money, complain to your bank or wallet straight away and keep the complaint number.
How much does a Jazz replacement SIM cost?
Rs 550 for prepaid or postpaid, according to Jazz's help page, with activation right after fingerprint verification.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
We checked on 10 October 2026. Blocking by *8822# or 111, replacement at Rs 550, eSIM at Rs 1,500, fingerprint verification and the 30-day change of ownership rule are from Jazz's help FAQ. The 24-hour duty to report a lost or stolen SIM is from Zong's PTA terms and conditions. The Verisys arrest is from the NCCIA statement of 10 October 2026, covered in our news on the bank manager's arrest. We did not test a SIM swap or a replacement ourselves.
