Short answer: If your K-Electric home bill is Rs 25,000 or more a month and you are not an active taxpayer, 7.5% advance income tax is added. If you are one, send K-Electric a scanned CNIC, online or at a Customer Care Centre, so it can stop the charge. The name and address must match your bill.

A big summer bill in Karachi can cross Rs 25,000 without much warning. Above that line, K-Electric adds advance income tax to the bill. For many households the extra amount is more than a week's groceries.

We read K-Electric's own FAQ page on 13 October 2026, including its section on Advance Income Tax for Non-Filers. The steps and documents below come from that page. The law behind the tax is covered separately in why filers pay no advance tax on home electricity.

The tax applies only above Rs 25,000 and only to inactive taxpayers

K-Electric explains that section 235 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 applies across Pakistan. A home bill under Rs 25,000 pays 0%. From Rs 25,000 up, a person not on the Active Taxpayer List pays 7.5%. A person on the list pays 0%.

An active taxpayer is someone who files returns and whose name appears on the Active Taxpayer List that FBR issues from time to time. Being a filer alone is not enough. K-Electric needs your CNIC on the account to know that the list entry is yours.

Your CNIC on the K-Electric account has to match the bill

K-Electric can only apply the exemption if it holds your CNIC. It also wants the name and address on that CNIC to match the name and address on the account. If the bill is in a relative's name, the match fails.

K-Electric adds that customers under Rs 25,000 should update too. A sudden rise in use then would not trigger the tax on your next bill. This is the company's advice, not a legal requirement.

Send your CNIC online or at a counter

If the account name and address already match your CNIC, you only need to share a copy of your CNIC. K-Electric lists two ways, then a confirmation.

  1. Upload a scanned copy of your CNIC through the update link on K-Electric's FAQ page.
  2. Or visit a K-Electric Customer Care Centre with a copy of your valid CNIC and your KE account number.
  3. Wait for the SMS. K-Electric says an auto-generated SMS confirms the update and your CNIC is printed on your next bill.

Keep the bill's 13 digit account number ready. The steps to check a K-Electric bill online show where it is printed.

Owners with a different name on the bill need a change of name

If you own the property but the K-Electric account is in another name, the CNIC update will not be enough. You apply for a change of name. K-Electric says this takes up to 19 working days, and you get an SMS when it is done.

You can also start the change of name in the KE Live app or the KE Live web portal. For the general process in every company, see how to change the name on your electricity bill.

Tenants, families and several meters

A tenant can update details too, if the address on the CNIC matches the billing address. K-Electric answers the usual family cases.

  • Tenant or owner: either one, or both, can update. Either way the 7.5% can be exempted.
  • Several owners: only one owner's or user's details are needed for each meter.
  • Several meters at one house: one resident who is a filer can be linked to all, if the address matches.
  • Living with parents: choose "Owner" on the customer form.
  • Several properties: register them all in your own name, or first do a change of name.

A tenant who pays bills for two places can claim the exemption on only one, because the CNIC carries one temporary address.

Get your tax deduction certificate

The tax you paid can be claimed when you file. K-Electric says you can get the Advance Tax Deduction certificate from an IBC, from KE WhatsApp, from the KE Live app, or by calling 118. Pensioners and retired people get no special exemption. They can only claim the amount back at filing.

Common questions

Is the 7.5% charged on every K-Electric bill?

No. K-Electric says it applies only where the monthly home bill is Rs 25,000 or more and the person is not an active taxpayer.

I file returns. Why am I still charged?

Your name must also appear on FBR's Active Taxpayer List, and K-Electric must hold your CNIC. Update the CNIC first. Check the list on FBR's website.

How do I know the update worked?

K-Electric sends an automatic SMS and prints your CNIC on the next bill. If neither arrives, ask at a Customer Care Centre or call 118.

Does the tax apply to a shared meter for lifts and pumps?

K-Electric says it wrote to FBR for clarity and has not given an answer on its page. Ask your society's management.

Can I get the tax back?

Yes, K-Electric says the amount can be claimed from FBR when you file your annual return. Use the deduction certificate as proof.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 13 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read K-Electric's FAQ page, section Advance Income Tax for Non-Filers. We did not open the upload form. We did not read FBR's Active Taxpayer List, and the page's description of section 235 is K-Electric's own summary. The 19 working day change of name time is K-Electric's figure.
