Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem Finishes Fourth in Asian Games Javelin Final With 80.29m

Arshad Nadeem finished fourth in the men's javelin final at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan on Monday, with a best throw of 80.29m. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage won gold with 88.55m. India's Yashvir Singh took silver and Rohit Yadav bronze.

Arshad Nadeem finishes fourth with 80.29m, 4.06m short of a medal

Arshad Nadeem finished fourth of 14 in the Asian Games javelin final with 80.29m, his third throw. Bronze went to Rohit Yadav with 84.35m, so Arshad missed a medal by 4.06m. Four of his six throws were fouls.

The final started at 4:15 pm PKT at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. Arshad opened with 76.69m, fouled his second throw, then threw 80.29m in round three. After that, every throw was a foul.

A foul, marked X on the sheet, is a throw that does not count. It can be a step over the line or a javelin that lands outside the sector.

The 80.29m is still better than anything the system had for him this year. His listed 2026 season best before the final was 78.63m, and the official sheet marks Monday's throw as a new season best. It is 12.68m below his Asian record of 92.97m from Paris in 2024, which still stands.

That gap tells the story of his year. The man who threw 92.97m for Olympic gold came into this final with the eighth best 2026 mark in the field, and that is roughly where the result landed.

Rumesh Pathirage of Sri Lanka won gold with 88.55m

Rumesh Pathirage won the men's javelin gold for Sri Lanka with 88.55m, his sixth and last throw. India's Yashvir Singh took silver with 85.72m, a new personal best. India's Rohit Yadav won bronze with 84.35m. No throw beat the Games record of 89.15m.

Pathirage came in as the man to beat. He had the best 2026 mark in the field, 92.62m, and threw first in the order. He was behind both Indians after three rounds. Then he took the lead with 88.33m in round four and added 88.55m with his last throw.

Yashvir Singh was the steadiest thrower in the final. All six of his throws were over 82m, and his last one, 85.72m, was the furthest he has ever thrown according to the official sheet.

Neeraj Chopra of India was not in the final, as the start list had already shown. Five throwers finished below Yasir, and Indonesia's Silfanus Ndiken fouled all three of his throws.

Muhammad Yasir finishes ninth and misses the cut to the last eight

Muhammad Yasir finished ninth with 73.50m, his second throw. Only the best eight after three rounds get three more throws, so his final ended after round three. He fouled his first throw and threw 73.47m on his third.

His listed personal best is 79.93m and his 2026 season best was 74.36m. So Monday's throw was close to his form for the year, but short of the 75.10m he needed to pass Korea's Nam Taepoong for eighth.

The official system lists him as Muhammad Yasir, age 28. Some fans know him as Yasir Sultan. We have used the name the system shows.

Ansar Abbas, Pakistan's long jumper, finished 12th of 12 in his final 15 minutes earlier, with 7.09m. China's Shi Yuhao won that gold with 8.17m.

Pakistan's Asian Games medal tally stays at four bronze

Pakistan still have four bronze medals and no gold or silver at the 2026 Asian Games after the javelin final. The official medal table shows Pakistan 33rd, level with Cambodia. The bronze medals came in women's cricket, mixed martial arts and two in men's squash.

The Pakistan medal table on 27 September already showed no gold and no silver. That is why so many people had marked the javelin as the best gold chance. That chance has now gone.

Sri Lanka's gold was their first of these Games. The official table now shows Sri Lanka with one gold and one silver, and 24th place.

Two team chances are left for Pakistan this week:

1. Men's hockey: semi-final against India on Thursday 1 October at 12:30 pm PKT, after the 7-2 win over Oman.
2. Men's cricket: a semi-final, after the Hong Kong quarter-final was washed out.
3. A win in either semi-final means at least a silver, which would be Pakistan's first medal above bronze at these Games.

The result matches what the start list showed before the final

The result follows the season marks on the official start list. Pathirage had the best 2026 mark, 92.62m, and won. Arshad had the best lifetime mark but only the eighth best 2026 mark, 78.63m, and finished fourth with 80.29m.

The start list for Arshad Nadeem's final, published on Sunday, showed Neeraj Chopra absent and Pathirage first in the throwing order. Both held. A throw past 89.15m would have been a Games record, and nobody threw that far.

Fourth is not a bad result on its own. But for an Olympic champion and Asian record holder, it is a hard one to take. The official system gives no reason for his low season marks, and we will not guess at fitness or injury.
