Short answer: On a National Savings certificate or account held by two people, choose Joint-A if both holders must agree to every withdrawal. Choose Joint-B if either holder may take the money out alone. Joint-A needs written consent of the other holder. Joint-B does not.

Many families put a certificate in two names, a husband and wife or a parent and an adult child. The form asks you to pick a joint type, and the choice decides who can touch the money. It is hard to change later, so read this before you sign.

We read the National Savings FAQ page and four product pages on 13 October 2026. The words "Joint-A" and "Joint-B" are the department's own.

With Joint-A, the money is payable to both holders together, or to either one only with the written consent of the other. A single holder cannot cash the certificate alone. This protects both people but slows things down when one is away.

The FAQ states it plainly: for Joint-A, encashment is payable to the holders jointly or to either with the written consent of the other. So if one holder is abroad, the other needs a signed consent paper before the office will pay.

  1. Both holders take their CNICs to the National Savings Centre.
  2. Both sign the encashment request, or one signs with the other's written consent attached.
  3. The office pays the amount as the form allows.
Steps to encash a Joint-A National Savings certificate

Joint-B lets either holder withdraw alone

With Joint-B, either investor can withdraw or encash the profit and the principal under his or her own signature. The other holder does not need to be present or to give consent. It is faster, but it needs full trust between the two names.

That means one holder could take the full amount without asking. Choose Joint-B only when you would be happy with that, for example a couple who manage money together every day, or an elderly parent who wants a child to act quickly in an emergency.

The two types differ on one question: who can sign

The only difference is the signature rule at encashment. Both types hold two adults, both show two names on the certificate, and both follow the same profit and tax rules for the product. Only the permission to withdraw changes.

Only some products show a joint option

The product pages say the Savings Account, Special Savings Certificates and Short Term Savings Certificates can be held by two adults jointly. Not every scheme offers it, so check the form for the product you want.

On the pages we read, the joint option appears for the Savings Account, the Special Savings Certificates and the Short Term Savings Certificates. The general FAQ says the schemes provide joint investment for two persons. We did not find a joint line on the Pensioners' Benefit or Shuhada account pages, and those two have their own rules on who can invest. We did not check Regular Income Certificates for joint wording.

If you plan to buy a scheme with a profit paid every month, read the page for Regular Income Certificates first. For a long-term certificate that pays every six months, see the Special Savings Account, which is a separate product.

Minors can be added with an adult

An adult can buy a certificate for a single minor, for two minors jointly, or jointly with a minor. A minor is identified by Form B or a Child Registration Certificate from NADRA. The adult acts for the child.

The product pages list the papers: a CNIC copy for adult Pakistanis, a NICOP or Pakistan Origin Card copy for overseas Pakistanis, and Form B or a CRC for a minor. For an overseas buyer, Naya Pakistan Certificates are a different route from National Savings.

Plan for death and for tax before you pick

Joint type only covers who can sign while both are alive. If a holder dies, a different process applies. Tax is also deducted on profit, so check each name against the Active Taxpayer List to avoid the higher rate.

The FAQ says withholding tax on profit is 15 percent for people on the Active Taxpayer List and 30 percent for those not on it, on the products it names. A joint certificate is one investment, and we did not find a line saying how the department applies the rate when the two holders differ in filer status. Ask the National Savings Centre before you buy. You can read how the Active Taxpayer List changed after the 15 October deadline.

If one holder dies, follow the steps in the page on how to claim a deceased person's National Savings Certificates. If a certificate is lost, see how to get a duplicate for a lost National Savings Certificate. The FAQ says that for a joint certificate the loss application must be signed by both holders.

Common questions

What is the difference between Joint-A and Joint-B in National Savings?

In Joint-A, payment goes to both holders jointly or to either with the written consent of the other. In Joint-B, either holder can withdraw or encash under his or her own signature.

Can I add a third person to a joint certificate?

No. The FAQ says National Savings schemes allow joint investment for two persons. We found no option for a third name.

Can a minor be a joint holder?

Yes. The product pages say an adult can buy jointly with a minor. The minor is identified by Form B or a CRC from NADRA.

Which joint type is safer?

Joint-A is safer against one holder acting alone, because the other must consent. Joint-B is quicker but lets either person take everything. Pick by trust and need.

Does the joint type change the profit rate?

We found no line on the pages we read that links the profit rate to the joint type. The rate depends on the scheme. Check the latest rate sheet for your product.

What do I need to buy a joint certificate?

Fill in the application form for the product, free from the issuing office, and attach a copy of the CNIC of each adult. Overseas Pakistanis attach a NICOP or POC copy.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 13 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read the National Savings FAQ page and the product pages on savings.gov.pk, run by the Central Directorate of National Savings (CDNS). The FAQ page shows "Last Updated: 26 August, 2025", so a rule may have changed since. We did not test a joint purchase at a counter. Confirm with your National Savings Centre or the helpline (051) 111 267 268 before you pay.

For the current rates by scheme, see National Savings profit rates from 1 October 2026.
