Short answer: SMAP is accounting software that SMEDA gives away free to small businesses in Pakistan. You register at smap.smeda.org, receive a CD key, then use the Download SMAP button to get the program. It has accounts and inventory modules, and SMEDA runs training in seven cities.

Many small shops still keep sales in a notebook and mix home and business money. When the tax office, a bank or a buyer asks for records, the notebook is not enough. SMEDA, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority, has offered a free accounting program for years so a small firm can keep proper books at no cost.

We read the SMAP site on 14 October 2026. We did not install the software, so we cannot comment on how easy it is to use.

What SMAP is and what it costs

SMAP is a software accounting package that SMEDA has offered through its website since September 2004. The site calls it free of cost. It was built around the documentation needs of Pakistani small businesses and has accounts and inventory modules.

The site names it the Smart Business Suite. SMEDA says about 12,000 SMEs in 200 cities have downloaded it and around 3,000 use it for their bookkeeping. That gap is normal for free software, and it shows why training and a routine matter more than the download.

The page does not say which Windows versions it runs on, or what language the screens use. Check that on the download page or the helpline before you plan around it.

How to register and download

You register on the SMAP site with your company details, receive a CD key, and then download the program from smap.smeda.org/software_download.php. The key is tied to the company name you gave at registration, so use the same spelling every time.

  1. Open smap.smeda.org on a computer you will use for the books.
  2. Register with your business name and contact details.
  3. Keep the CD key somewhere safe, such as a locked drawer or a note in your email.
  4. Click the Download SMAP button, which leads to the software download page.
  5. Install the program and enter the CD key when it asks.

If you forget the key, the site has a recovery form. It asks for the company name you used at registration and then you press Submit. This is why the spelling matters.

What SMAP covers and what it does not say

SMEDA says SMAP has modules for accounts and inventory. That covers the two things most small traders need, which are money in and out, and stock on the shelf. The site does not describe payroll, tax filing or sales tax invoicing, so do not assume those are included.

If you need to issue tax invoices to FBR, check what your software must do first. Read the small business FBR penalties for NTN display, profile updates and cash memos so you know what the records must support.

Training and support

SMEDA lists a SMAP network in seven cities: Lahore, Sargodha, Multan, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta and Karachi. You can ask the site to email you when training is planned in your city. There is also a helpline page and a contacts page.

The site says there are 50 enlistments in total from service providers and training service providers. We could not confirm their fees, so ask before you book anyone.

Start small. Enter this month's sales and expenses only, and check the totals against your bank statement. Add last year's figures later if you need them. A system you actually use every day is better than a perfect set-up you abandon.

Keep your records ready for tax and loans

Banks, buyers and the tax office all want clean records. Separate your own spending from the business, keep every receipt and back up the data weekly. Good books also make it easier to ask for a loan or a SMEDA grant.

If you are a sole trader and have not yet registered, see how to register as a sole proprietor with FBR. For planning cash flow once the books are running, use the SMEDA financial calculators. When you sign supply deals, the SMEDA contract templates are another free tool.

Do not rely only on one computer. Copy the data to a USB drive or an email account you control. A damaged laptop should not erase a year of accounts.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 14 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read smap.smeda.org and the SMEDA homepage. We did not install SMAP, so system needs, language and features beyond the two modules are not verified. Ask the SMAP helpline before you depend on it for your books.
