Change Your Subject or Group in FBISE SSC and HSSC: Regular Students Apply by 30 November
Change a subject or group in FBISE SSC and HSSC: the 30 November deadline for regular students, private candidate permission, and when no change is allowed.

Short answer: A regular FBISE student can ask to change a subject or group up to 30 November of that year, through the head of the school. A private candidate must get permission before the last date for admission forms. After Part II is attempted, no subject can be changed. Permission, once given, is final.
A girl in Islamabad starts class 11 in pre-medical and finds, by October, that biology is not for her. Can she move to computer science? Under the Federal Board's rules she can, but only through the school, only before a date, and only once. Many families find out too late.
We read rule 1.15, rule 1.16 and related lines of the FBISE General Rules for Examination on 13 October 2026. This guide covers the Federal Board. The 30 November date is the one written in the rules. The board may announce a different date in a notice, so check the latest notice too.
A regular student applies through the school by 30 November
Rule 1.15 (f) says an application for change of subjects from a regular candidate is accepted up to 30 November of that year. The head of the school must refer the case. The student must be able to complete the required attendance in the new subject or group.
A subject chosen at the start of class nine or eleven is not changed in the ordinary course. The board allows a change only when it is truly needed in the interest of the student, in view of aptitude and interest. The change applies for one examination only.
| Student type | Deadline to change subject |
|---|---|
| Regular student | 30 November of that year, through the school |
| Private candidate | Before the last date of admission forms, with prior permission |
| Regular to private after Part I | Up to the last date of the admission form |
| Private to regular | Up to 30 November, if a school admits the student |
| After Part II exam | No change allowed |

Private candidates need permission before the admission form date
For a private candidate, permission to change subjects may be obtained up to the last date for submitting admission forms before the exam starts. Prior permission is needed from the Controller of Examinations (Conduct).
This is a written permission, not a verbal one. Ask for the permission letter and attach it to your admission form. Without it, the board may reject the form or mark the wrong subjects.
A private candidate who sat Part I can also change category to regular and seek admission in class ten or twelve. That needs a school head ready to admit the student on the class nine or eleven result. The change must be done by 30 November. For HSSC, a practical subject needs Science group at SSC level.
Know what you can change and when you cannot
Before appearing in Part I, a student can change one or more elective subjects inside the same group, with the principal's permission and with enough attendance. After Part I, individual subjects cannot be changed, except in exceptional cases the Chairman decides.
- Before Part I: change elective subjects inside the same group, with the principal's permission.
- After Part I: no individual subject change, except in cases the Chairman decides.
- After Part II: no change of any subject.
- For a failed student: change only from practical to non practical subjects.
- Once granted: the permission is final and is not cancelled.

Rule 1.15 (h) says the student must give the option finally. The permission, once issued, is not cancelled. Think before applying, because you cannot switch back.
Failed students have their own four choices
A regular student who fails in Part II may reappear as an ex-candidate of the same school, in the group and subjects offered in the last exam. Or the student may change optional subjects after appearing in Part II, or retake admission in Part I, or sit as a private candidate.

The choices written in the March 2024 amendment are these. A failed student can reappear as an ex-candidate in the same group. A failed student can change optional subjects or group in the current course after appearing in Part II. A failed student can take fresh admission in any group in Part I at an affiliated school. A failed student can also sit Part I or both parts as a fresh private candidate.
Passed students who want a new subject without changing their result can sit an additional subject. That route gives only a separate certificate, with two attempts, and has no effect on the grade.
Use the right forms and keep the paper trail
Schools handle the application for a regular student. Keep a copy of the school letter and the board reply. If your registration shows a wrong subject, a correction may be needed. FBISE lists correction proformas on its website for SSC and HSSC.
To plan the year, read the page on FBISE class 11 registration to 30 October, because registration and subject choice are linked. The fee for the exam is in the guide to the FBISE second annual exam. A student's name or date of birth problem is a different matter, covered in the page on NADRA and FBISE student registration.
If the subject change is about a new career path, a good starting point is the page on university routes for A level students, which shows how subject mixes affect admission.

How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked on 13 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read rule 1.15 and rule 1.16 in the FBISE General Rules for Examination, which carry amendments to March 2024. We did not see any 2026 notice that moves the 30 November date, but we did not search every notice. Confirm with your school before the date.
