A child of 5 usually wears school shoe size 27, for a foot about 18 cm long, and a child of 10 wears about size 34, for a 22.7 cm foot. That is the age chart a Pakistani shoe brand publishes for school shoes, which we read on 4 November 2026. Age is only a rough guide, though. Measure your child's foot in centimetres and match that number, because two children of the same age can be two sizes apart.

Winter term is when many parents in Pakistan buy a second pair of school shoes and new winter clothes. Children's feet grow fast, so a pair bought in March may already pinch by November. Below is the full age chart, a simple way to measure at home, and how much room to leave for growth.

The chart below is Stylo's school shoe size chart, copied from its size chart page. Sizes are in the European style used on most school shoes in Pakistani shops, from 26 to 37.

Each size step adds roughly two thirds of a centimetre. Between ages 4.5 and 7 the chart moves up a size every six months, which shows how quickly young feet grow.

Measure your child's foot at home

Measure standing, not sitting, because the foot spreads when a child puts weight on it. Do it in the evening and with school socks on.

  1. Put a sheet of paper on the floor against a wall.
  2. Ask your child to stand on it with the heel touching the wall and knees straight.
  3. Mark the tip of the longest toe with a pencil held straight up.
  4. Measure from the wall edge to the mark in centimetres.
  5. Repeat for the other foot and use the longer number to find the size in the chart.
Steps to measure a child's foot for school shoes

How much room to leave for growth

Leave a small gap, about the width of your thumb, between the longest toe and the front of the shoe when your child stands. More than that and the shoe slips, causing trips and blisters.

It is tempting to buy two sizes up so the shoes last all year. That usually backfires. A shoe that is too long folds at the wrong place, rubs the heel and wears out faster. One size up, at most, is a better compromise, and only if the heel still holds firmly when your child walks.

  • Press test. Press the front of the shoe while your child stands. You should feel a little space, not the toe.
  • Heel test. Ask your child to walk. The heel should not lift out of the shoe.
  • Width test. Look at the sides. The foot should not bulge over the sole.
  • Check every term. Young children rarely say a shoe hurts. Re-measure at the start of each term.

Kids' clothes sizes in Pakistan go by age labels

Most Pakistani brands label children's clothes by age, such as 2Y, 4Y, 6Y, 8Y and 10Y, and baby clothes by months, such as 8M, 12M and 18M. J. (Junaid Jamshed), for example, sells its boys' kameez shalwar in 2Y to 10Y sizes and teen sizes from 12Y.

Age labels are an average. A tall 6 year old may need 8Y. Before ordering online, measure the child's chest and the length from shoulder to knee, then compare with the size guide on the product page. For winter, choose sweaters and jackets with room for a layer underneath, because school uniforms in cold cities often need a vest or warm inner under the jumper. Check the winter 2026 cold outlook before buying heavy coats, and the Punjab winter vacation dates if you want new clothes ready for the second term.

Buying kids' shoes and clothes online

Children's items are often on sale, and sale items are often not exchangeable. Breakout, which also runs Breakout Kids, allows only size exchanges on markdown items and only if stock is available. Bata's policy says sale items are not exchangeable. Stylo gives 10 days to exchange in store.

So for a growing child, it can be worth paying full price for shoes in a size you are unsure about, and keeping sale buys for items like socks and vests where fit is less critical. Keep the receipt and tags until the shoes have been tried on at home. Our guide to return and refund rights for online orders explains what to do if a store refuses a fair exchange.

Common questions

What shoe size is a 7 year old in Pakistan?

On the school shoe chart we read, a 7 year old is size 31, for a foot about 20.7 cm long. Measure the foot to be sure, as children vary.

What shoe size is a 10 year old?

The chart gives size 34 for a 10 year old, for a foot of about 22.7 cm. Some 10 year olds already need 35 or 36.

How often should I check my child's shoe size?

Check at the start of each school term. Young children can move up a size in about six months.

Should I buy school shoes one size bigger?

One size up at most, and only if the heel stays firm. Leave about a thumb's width in front of the longest toe.

What does 4Y mean on kids' clothes?

It means the size is made for an average 4 year old. Use the brand's size guide and your child's chest and length measurements, not age alone.

Can I exchange kids' shoes bought on sale?

Often not. Bata does not exchange sale items, and Breakout allows only size exchanges on markdown items when stock is available.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read Stylo's school shoes size chart on its size chart page (stylo.pk) on 4 November 2026, and the children's size labels on J.'s own product and collection pages (junaidjamshed.com). Exchange terms are from the refund policy pages of Breakout, Bata and Stylo, read the same day. The fitting advice is general guidance, not medical advice. If your child has pain, flat feet or walks unusually, ask a doctor.
