Check If Your YouTube Shorts Count as Original in Pakistan: Reach Cut for Re-Uploads Since 1 October
YouTube cut Shorts reach for re-uploads on 1 October 2026. See what counts as original, how Pakistani creators can check their channel and what to change first.

Short answer: Since 1 October 2026, YouTube ranks original Shorts higher and shows re-uploaded clips to fewer people. If your Shorts channel mostly reposts other creators' videos with only small edits, expect less reach. Add your own voice, footage or analysis to every clip.
A clip channel in Lahore posts ten cricket and drama Shorts a day, all cut from other people's videos. Last week the views were steady. This week they may not be. That is the creator YouTube's change is aimed at.
YouTube announced the change in a Help Community post titled "Prioritizing original content on Shorts", dated 1 October 2026. That page loads only in a browser, so we could not read its full text ourselves. The wording below follows reports of the post, and we mark it as reported where it matters.
YouTube now gives original Shorts more reach and re-uploads less
YouTube says its Shorts recommendation systems now prioritise original content. Videos re-uploaded from other creators, with nothing added, are recommended to fewer viewers. The change is about reach in the Shorts feed, not a ban.
As reported, channels that are mainly "aggregating or re-uploading" other creators' videos without significant changes will likely see less distribution. A single reused clip inside an otherwise original channel is a different case. The system looks at the pattern of the whole channel.
Two points are worth keeping apart. First, this is a recommendation change. Second, earning money from Shorts is judged by a separate policy, which we cover below.
Small edits and templates do not make a clip yours
Per the reports, YouTube names two things that do not count as adding something: minor technical edits and template-based changes. Three things do count: your own commentary, unique editing and storytelling.
| What you did to the clip | Likely to count as original? |
|---|---|
| Cropped it, added a filter or changed the speed | No, a minor technical edit |
| Put it in a channel template with your logo | No, a template change |
| Added your own voice-over explaining the clip | Yes, your own commentary |
| Cut several sources into a new story with a point of view | Yes, unique edit and storytelling |
| Filmed it yourself | Yes, original footage |
These are our plain-language readings of the reported criteria. They are not YouTube's own table.

Reach and monetisation are two separate checks
The 1 October change affects who sees your Shorts. Whether a Short can earn is decided by YouTube's monetisation policies, in particular the inauthentic content rule. A channel can lose reach and still be monetised, or the other way round.
We read YouTube's channel monetisation policies page on 12 October 2026. It says content that is repetitive or mass produced can be removed from earning, and it asks for original, authentic input from the creator. The rule applies to AI-made content that relies on generic templates. The separate Shorts view threshold is set out in the note on the YouTube Partner Program changes for 2027.
If you earn in rupees from YouTube, the income also has tax rules, set out in how YouTube income is taxed in Pakistan.
How to check your own Shorts channel this week
Open YouTube Studio, look at your last 30 Shorts and sort them honestly into original and reused. If more than half are reused with no real addition, change your next ten uploads before you worry about anything else.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content, then Shorts.
- List your last 30 Shorts and mark each as filmed by you, reworked by you or reposted.
- For every reposted clip, ask what a viewer gets from your version that the original does not give.
- Add a voice-over, a caption of your own analysis or a new cut to each clip you keep using.
- Compare Shorts views in Analytics for the two weeks before and after 1 October.

A drop in views after 1 October does not prove this change caused it. Views also move with topic, season and upload time. Use the before-and-after comparison as a hint, not a verdict.
What Pakistani clip channels should change first
Credit and a watermark are not enough on their own. Meta says the same for Facebook and Instagram, and the rules differ in the details, as shown in the check for unoriginal content on Facebook and Instagram. Move your channel toward Shorts only you can make.
- Reaction and commentary channels: speak over the clip and make a clear point.
- News and sports clip channels: add context such as the score, the date and why it matters.
- Entertainment channels: film your own sketches rather than reposting drama scenes.
Respect copyright too. Reusing someone's video with commentary still needs the right to use it, and a copyright claim is a separate problem from reach.
Common questions
Does YouTube ban channels that repost Shorts?
Not under this change. It reduces how far re-uploaded Shorts are recommended. Separate monetisation and copyright rules can still lead to demonetisation or claims.
When did the Shorts originality change start?
YouTube's Help Community post is dated 1 October 2026. Recommendations are updated gradually, so you may not see an exact switch date in your numbers.
Does adding a watermark or my channel name make a Short original?
No. As reported, minor technical edits and template-based changes do not count. Your own commentary, unique editing or storytelling do.
Will this stop my Shorts from earning money?
This change covers recommendations only, as reported. Earning is judged by the monetisation policies, including the inauthentic content rule.
Can I still use clips from other creators?
Yes, if you add something real of your own and you have the right to use the clip. A clip with nothing added is the case YouTube says it will recommend less.
Where do I see my Shorts reach?
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, choose Content and select Shorts. Compare views across date ranges to see a change.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
We read YouTube's channel monetisation policies on 12 October 2026. YouTube's Help Community post "Prioritizing original content on Shorts" of 1 October 2026 loads only in a browser, so its wording above is as reported. Check Studio and the policy pages again before you change your channel.
