How to Update Marital Status and Husband's Name on a Pakistani Passport Online From Abroad
Overseas Pakistanis can change marital status, and for women the husband's name, on a passport online. See the DGIP document list, CNIC first rule and contacts.

Overseas Pakistanis can change marital status on a machine readable passport through the DGIP online portal, and a woman can also change her husband's name and surname. You upload a revised CNIC or NICOP, a marriage certificate for women, the husband's CNIC or passport, fingerprints, a photo and a residence document.
A wedding changes the passport page long before anyone updates it. Then an airline or a visa office asks why the booklet says single, and the fix is suddenly urgent. The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP) lets people living abroad make this change from home. We read the DGIP online passport page on 15 October 2026 and set out its rules below. The page shows a last update of 4 September 2024, so check each screen on the portal.
DGIP's online Partial Modification covers marital status and profession
The category is called Partial Modification, with application type Modification. It covers a change of marital status for women and men. For women, DGIP says the husband's name and surname can be changed too. Profession can be changed after codal formalities.
"Partial" means the rest of the passport stays as it is. If your name, father's name or date of birth is wrong, that is a different case, covered in the guide to changing a name or date of birth on a passport. Use the marital status route only when the change is about marriage.

Women upload a marriage certificate and the husband's CNIC or passport
DGIP lists a revised CNIC, NICOP or Smart Card for everyone. A marriage certificate and a scan of the husband's CNIC, NICOP or passport are listed for women only. Men upload the revised card, fingerprints, a photo and a residence document.
| Scan or document | Woman | Man |
|---|---|---|
| Revised CNIC, NICOP or Smart Card | Yes | Yes |
| Marriage certificate | Yes | Not listed |
| Husband's CNIC, NICOP or passport | Yes | Not listed |
| Fingerprint proforma | Yes | Yes |
| Photo, 350 by 467 pixels, JPEG | Yes | Yes |
| Visa, PR card, asylum card or other passport | Yes | Yes |
DGIP asks for the photo on a white background in JPEG or JPG, up to 3 MB. The fingerprint form is downloaded from your portal account and scanned as an original. The marriage certificate should be the one on record, and the guide to registering a nikah explains where it comes from.
Update your CNIC or NICOP first, because the portal asks for the revised card
The first item on DGIP's list is the revised card. Your CNIC or NICOP must already show the new marital status, so the passport can match it. Apply to NADRA first and upload the new card when it arrives.
NADRA handles that change, and for NICOP holders the steps are in the guide to applying for a NICOP online on the PakID app. Inside Pakistan, the CNIC route and fee are in the explanation of updating a CNIC after marriage. DGIP states the same order for Pakistan: get the CNIC or NICOP revised first, then visit the passport office with the documents.

Apply in this order and pay by card at the end
Log in to the DGIP online passport portal, choose the Modification type, upload the scans, review the file and pay by credit or debit card. DGIP says all online files are reviewed at its headquarters, and some go to a mission for verification.
- Get the revised CNIC or NICOP from NADRA that shows the new marital status.
- Download the fingerprint proforma from your portal account and record the prints.
- Take a photo on a white background and check it is 350 by 467 pixels.
- Upload every scan, including the marriage certificate and the husband's CNIC or passport if you are a woman.
- Pay the fee by card at the last step, then watch your registered email for updates.
The fee cannot be refunded or moved to another person, DGIP says. The page gives no amount for this category, so we cannot state one. The Pakistan fees are in the official passport fee rates, and your mission sets its own charges abroad.
A profession change needs a notification
For a change of profession, DGIP lists one document: an original scan of the notification. A job letter alone is not what the page names. If your profession changed because of a government post, use the official notification for that post.
Misdeclaration carries a penalty. DGIP warns that false information or documents can be punished under section 6 of the Passport Act, with a sentence and a fine. Declare marital status as it stands on the revised card and nothing else.
Contact the DGIP online section if the application stalls
Email mrponline@dgip.gov.pk for application problems and onlinedelivery@dgip.gov.pk for delivery problems. Include your full name, contact number, online tracking ID, CNIC number and complete address in each message. DGIP lists the online section phone as 0092-51-8482202.
If the old passport is lost or damaged, a modification is not the right category. Damage, full pages and loss have their own online types, and for a loss, the steps in replacing a lost Pakistani passport apply.
Common questions about marital status on a passport
Can I change my marital status on a passport online?
Yes, if you live abroad. DGIP lists Partial Modification for marital status in its online portal, for women and men.
Can a woman add her husband's name?
Yes. DGIP says women can change the husband's name and surname through the same category.
Do men need a marriage certificate?
DGIP lists a marriage certificate and the spouse's document for women only. Men upload the revised card and the common documents.
Do I need a new CNIC first?
Yes. DGIP's first requirement is a revised CNIC, NICOP or Smart Card, so the card must show the change before you apply.
Is the fee refundable?
No. DGIP says the online fee is not refundable and cannot be transferred to another person.
What if I give wrong information?
DGIP says misdeclaration can be punished under section 6 of the Passport Act, with a sentence and a fine.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked 15 October 2026. The categories, document list, payment rule and contacts come from the DGIP online passport page, and the CNIC-first order for Pakistan from the DGIP ordinary passport page. We did not file an application. The online page shows a last update of 4 September 2024, so portal screens and wording may have changed.
