Short answer: PTA's Annual Report 2025 says Jazz has finished switching off its 3G network across Pakistan, and Ufone has finished two of its phases and started the third. If your phone or SIM only works on 3G, check now that it has 4G and, for calls, VoLTE. Open your phone's mobile network settings and look for 4G or LTE.

A phone that worked fine last year may now show one bar, or "emergency calls only", in a place that used to have 3G. The reason can be as simple as the 3G signal being gone.

We read the Telecom Licensing chapter of PTA's Annual Report 2025 on 14 October 2026. It is PTA's own record of the 3G phase-out. We did not test any phone on a live network, and the report does not give a date for every operator.

PTA says Jazz has completed its 3G shutdown

The report says Jazz was the first operator to complete the nationwide decommissioning of its 3G network, under PTA's standard operating procedure for 3G sunset. Ufone has completed its first two phases and begun the third. PTA says Pakistan is phasing out 3G to free spectrum for faster services.

Spectrum is the radio space networks use to carry signals. PTA says the move from 3G to 4G, and next to 5G, is needed for growing data demand and faster response. The report does not name dates for Zong or Telenor, and we do not guess them.

PTA August 2026 figure of 2.9 million Pakistanis still on 3G

Not many people remain on 3G now. Our report on PTA's August 2026 4G and 3G user data shows about 2.9 million 3G users, against 159.4 million on 4G.

Four signs your phone is not ready

You are at risk if your phone has no 4G or LTE option, no VoLTE setting, an old SIM card, or has never been registered with PTA. Each sign has a simple check. None needs a shop visit, except a SIM swap.

Table of signs that a phone or SIM is not ready for a 4G-only network in Pakistan
SignWhat it may meanWhat to do
No 4G or LTE in network settingsThe phone is 3G onlyPlan a replacement
No VoLTE or HD calling optionCalls may use an older networkAsk your operator
Old SIM cardThe SIM may not carry 4GAsk for a 4G SIM swap
Network shows only 3G or 2GNo 4G in the phone or areaUpdate the phone and test elsewhere

Use the steps to check if your SIM and phone support 4G and VoLTE on Jazz, Zong or Ufone. That page also covers the codes and menus for each network.

Check the phone settings in five minutes

Open your phone's mobile network or SIM settings and look for a preferred network type, such as 4G, LTE or 5G. If 4G is listed and selected, the phone is 4G ready. If the list stops at 3G, the handset cannot use 4G.

  1. Open Settings, then Mobile network or SIM cards.
  2. Tap your SIM, then Preferred network type or Network mode.
  3. Look for 4G, LTE or 5G. Pick the highest one marked "recommended" or "automatic".
  4. Restart the phone and see if the signal icon shows 4G or LTE.
  5. Call a friend to test voice. If calls fail, ask your operator about VoLTE.

Menu names change by brand. The names above are common, but yours may differ. If you cannot find the option, search for "network" in Settings.

If the signal is still weak at home after you switch to 4G, the fault may be the building. See how to fix weak mobile signal at home. Wi-Fi calling can also help indoors, as shown in how to turn on Wi-Fi calling.

Replace the SIM or the phone only if you must

If the phone supports 4G but the SIM is old, ask your operator for a SIM swap. If the phone is 3G only, a replacement is needed. A new phone must be PTA registered before it works on a local SIM.

SIM swaps are done at an operator service centre with your CNIC and biometrics. The steps differ by network, as in how to get a Jazz duplicate SIM. We could not read an official Jazz offer for a free 4G SIM upgrade, so ask your operator what it charges.

Before you buy any phone, whether new or used, check its PTA status. The free app is covered in how to check a phone's PTA status with the DVS app. A used phone that is blocked will not work, however good its price.

Common questions

Has Jazz switched off 3G?

PTA's Annual Report 2025 says Jazz was the first operator to complete the nationwide decommissioning of its 3G network.

What about Ufone, Zong and Telenor?

The report says Ufone has finished two phases and begun the third. It gives no dates for Zong or Telenor, so check with them.

Will my 4G phone work after 3G is gone?

Yes, if the phone supports 4G and your area has 4G. For calls, also check that VoLTE is supported on your network.

How do I know if my phone is 4G?

Open mobile network settings and look for 4G or LTE as a network type. If only 2G and 3G are listed, the phone is not 4G.

Do I need a new SIM?

Only if your old SIM does not carry 4G. Ask your operator to confirm and swap it at a service centre if needed.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 14 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read the Telecom Licensing chapter of PTA's Annual Report 2025. The report is from November 2025, so Ufone's progress may have moved on. We did not read an operator notice about 3G, and we did not test a phone on a live network.
