An electric car (EV) runs only on a battery and a motor. You charge it from a plug at home or at a charging station, and it uses no petrol at all. Three companies sell EVs in Pakistan with prices on their own sites: Mega Motor Company for BYD, Lucky Motor Corporation for Kia and Hyundai Nishat for Hyundai. We list six EVs you can price today, each with the seller's own picture.

The only electric car under Rs 10 million is the BYD Atto 3

At Rs 8,990,000, the BYD Atto 3 is the only EV on any official list we read that costs less than Rs 10 million. The next cheapest, the BYD Seal, costs Rs 5,800,000 more.

BYD Atto 3: from Rs 8,990,000

The Atto 3 is a compact electric SUV. Rs 8,990,000 is the price shown on its own page on BYD Pakistan's site. For comparison, that is Rs 1,055,000 more than a petrol Toyota Corolla Cross Gasoline X. Your saving on fuel decides whether the extra is worth it.

BYD Seal: from Rs 14,790,000

The Seal is BYD's electric sedan, priced from Rs 14,790,000 on its page. BYD says it has a range of 570 km. It is the cheapest electric sedan on an official list in Pakistan.

Electric SUVs from Kia and Hyundai cost Rs 16.9 million to Rs 38.7 million

Kia sells the EV5 and EV9. Hyundai sells the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6. The Kia EV5 is the cheapest of the four at Rs 16,850,000, and the EV9 is the most expensive EV in this list at Rs 38,650,000.

Kia EV5: Rs 16,850,000 to Rs 21,850,000

Electric cars with no price you can use yet

BYD's site also has pages for the Atto 2 and the Sealion 7, but both show a placeholder of "PKR 10" instead of a real price. Treat them as not yet priced. MG also lists the MG4 EV, but its site loads prices in a way we could not read, so we have left it out rather than guess.

The BYD Shark 6 pickup on the same site, priced from Rs 19,950,000, is tagged PHEV (plug-in hybrid) by BYD, so it is not a pure EV. Other plug-in and ordinary hybrids are in our hybrid car price list.

Charging and registration change the real cost of an EV

An EV costs far less to run than a petrol car, but only if you can charge at home. Registration is also much cheaper in some provinces. Punjab's excise department, for example, exempts 95% of the registration fee for electric vehicles. Check both before you compare prices.

The fees in each province are in our explainer on how to register an electric car in Pakistan. Before you pay any deposit, run through these steps.

  1. Check that you can fit a charger where you park every night.
  2. Work out your monthly charging cost at your own electricity tariff.
  3. Find the charging stations on the routes you drive most.
  4. Ask the dealer for the on-road price with tax, insurance and registration.
  5. Book only against the seller's signed booking order, and pay into its own account.
