Google's AI Contribution Pilot Pays Some Publishers: Pakistani Sites Cannot Apply, and What to Do Now
Google tests paying publishers when content shapes AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini answers. It is invite only. See what Pakistani site owners can check now.

Short answer: Google is testing payments to some publishers whose content helps shape answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode and the Gemini app. The test is called the AI contribution pilot. It is invitation only, there is no form to apply, and Google has not published a list of eligible countries. Pakistani sites cannot sign up.
A Pakistani news site owner in Karachi sees the headlines and asks one thing: where do I apply? The honest answer is that nobody can. Google picks the sites and then shows them a report inside Search Console.
We could not open a Google page that sets out the pilot's rules, so everything about the programme below is as reported by trade coverage of the pilot. We say so where it matters. What we did read at source is Google's own documentation of Search Console and AI features, and that is where Pakistani publishers can act today.
The pilot pays when content shapes an AI answer
As reported, Google pays when a page "contributes significantly" to an answer generated in the Gemini app, AI Overviews or AI Mode. Pages that are only linked in the answer, or used to confirm a fact after the answer is written, do not qualify.
Payment is tied to that generation step. Google has not published how it measures contribution or how it sets a payout. Invited publishers see a report in Search Console, accept terms there and view what they earned.
The group is small. Reports put it at about 100 publishers, many of them small or mid-sized sites and not only news. Reported payouts vary widely, and for several participants they amount to a tiny share of their ad revenue.
There is no application form and no country list
The programme is described as invite only. As reported, nobody can sign up, and Google has not said how it chooses sites. We found no published list of eligible countries, so we cannot say Pakistan is excluded by name. We can say a Pakistani site has no way to apply.
| Question | What is known, as reported |
|---|---|
| Can a site apply? | No, it is by invitation |
| Where is it managed? | Inside Search Console |
| What earns payment? | Content that contributes significantly to an AI answer |
| Do links or fact checks after the answer earn payment? | No |
| Are payout rates published? | No |
| Are eligible countries published? | No |

What a Pakistani publisher can check in Search Console today
Two things are open to everyone. First, whether your pages are cited in AI features. Second, how much traffic comes from them. Google added AI performance reporting to Search Console, which our note on checking AI Overviews and AI Mode citations walks through.
That report counts appearance and clicks. It is not the pilot's payout report. Do not confuse the two, and do not trust any seller who says they can get your site into the pilot for a fee.
Steps to make your site a stronger candidate for AI answers
Nobody outside Google knows how invitations are chosen. What a publisher can do is make pages that are worth citing and easy to read. Those steps also help ordinary search, so they cost nothing to try.
- Verify your site in Search Console and check the AI performance report for cited pages.
- Publish pages with facts you checked yourself, with the source named and the date shown.
- Keep one clear answer near the top of each page, then the detail below it.
- Fix indexing problems so every important page can be crawled.
- Read Google's spam policies and remove scaled or thin pages.

Do not chase tricks. Our report that Google says llms.txt and AEO hacks are not needed explains why. The business side of AI answers for shops and services is covered in what Pakistani businesses should do about AI Overviews.
What to watch for next
If Google widens the pilot, the first sign will be a message inside Search Console, not a public sign-up page. Check the Search Console messages inbox on your property each week.
Also watch for the rules. Google has not said whether payment will continue, grow or end after the test. Treat any income from it as a bonus, never as a business plan.
Common questions
Can Pakistani websites join Google's AI contribution pilot?
Not by applying. The pilot is by invitation inside Search Console, and Google has published no country list or application form.
How do I know if my site was invited?
An invited site would see a report and terms to accept inside Search Console. If you see no such report, you have not been invited.
Does Google pay me when AI Overviews link to my page?
As reported, no. Pages that are only linked, or used to verify a fact after the answer, do not qualify. Payment relates to contribution while the answer is generated.
How much does the pilot pay?
Google has not published payout rates. Reports describe wide differences, with some participants earning very little relative to their ad revenue.
Is AdSense payment affected?
This pilot is separate from AdSense. Your AdSense eligibility and payments are covered by the normal programme rules.
Should I block Google from using my content in AI answers?
That is a business decision with traffic trade-offs. Blocking can reduce your visibility in AI features, so weigh it against what the AI report shows for your site.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
We read Google's Search Central documentation updates page on 12 October 2026. We did not find a Google page that describes the AI contribution pilot, so its details are as reported. Rules and eligibility can change, so check Search Console messages and Google's own announcements.
