Google Adds More Inline Links and an Official Sites Box to AI Mode: What Pakistani Websites Should Check
Google's 15 October 2026 update puts more inline links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews and tests an official sites box. See six checks for a Pakistani site.

Google announced on 15 October 2026 that AI Mode and AI Overviews will show more inline links, place them higher in the answer, test a dedicated section for official websites at the top of a response, roll out news carousels to more countries and languages, add thumbnails to the related links at the end of an answer, and test clickable creator names that open Search profiles. For a Pakistani website, the practical change is that the pages Google cites inside an AI answer get more visible links, and official or primary pages may get a box of their own.
We read Google's announcement on its own blog on 19 October 2026, four days after it was posted. Google also said the number of people using its Preferred Sources feature has grown more than seven times since the start of 2026. None of the five changes needs new code on your site, but three of them reward pages that are already structured well, and one of them is not open to Pakistani creators yet.
Google is adding more inline links and moving them higher in AI answers
Inline links are the links Google places on words or phrases inside an AI response. Google says it has made continued and substantial increases to how often they appear, and is now launching updates to show them higher up in responses more often, so the key sources are clickable as soon as the reader starts.
For a site owner, this is the change that matters most. A page cited only in the side panel of an AI answer gets few clicks. A page linked on the phrase the reader is actually reading gets more. Google has not published figures for the click difference, and we cannot measure it from outside, but the direction is plainly towards the cited page.
Whether your page is cited at all depends on the same things as a normal ranking: the page answers a clear question, the facts are checkable, and the site has a record on that topic. The AI Overviews and AI Mode report in Search Console shows whether your Pakistani site already appears in these answers, which is the baseline to watch over the coming weeks.

A dedicated section for official websites is being tested at the top of answers
Google says that for some tasks there are only one or two official places on the web, and it will test a display that surfaces those links in a dedicated section at the top of an AI response, with a line explaining why each link is useful. This builds on how Google already shows a site's link when you clearly want that site.
In Pakistan, the official place for most tasks is a government, regulator or company page: NADRA, FBR, PTA, a bank, an operator. If you run one of those sites, this is a reason to make sure the task page exists at a stable URL, loads without a login, and carries a plain title. If you run a guide site like ours, the official box will sit above your link, and your page earns its click by explaining what the official page does not.
Google calls this a test, not a launch, and gives no date or country list. A test can be withdrawn. Do not rebuild a site around it, but do fix any official page that currently returns an error or a PDF where a web page should be.
| Change announced on 15 October 2026 | Status in Google's words | What a Pakistani site owner can do |
|---|---|---|
| More inline links, shown higher in the answer | Launching | Keep answers factual and specific so the page is worth citing |
| Dedicated section for official websites | Testing | Official sites: keep task pages stable, public and clearly titled |
| News carousels in more locations and languages | Rolling out | News sites: publish timely articles with correct dates and the preferred sources button |
| Related article links with thumbnails | Launching | Give every article a clear image and a specific title |
| Clickable creator names linking to Search profiles | Testing in AI Mode | Nothing yet; Search profiles are limited to India and the United States |
News carousels and thumbnail links reward timely articles with a clear image
Google says it is starting to roll out the prominent carousels for timely articles in AI Search features to more locations and languages, and that these carousels highlight a reader's Preferred Sources. It is also making the related links at the end of some AI responses larger, with image thumbnails and a more clickable design.
Google does not name the new locations or languages, so we cannot say whether Pakistan or Urdu is in this wave. The sensible preparation is the same either way. A news page needs a visible publication date, an article image of at least 1200 pixels wide, and a headline that says what happened. The checklist in whether a Pakistani site is ready for Google Discover covers the image and date rules, and they are the same rules the carousels use.
The seven times growth in Preferred Sources use is Google's own figure and is worth acting on. A reader who has marked your site as preferred sees it more in these carousels. Adding the preferred sources button to a Pakistani news site takes two lines of code, and it is the one thing on this list that directly increases how often your pages appear.

Creator profiles in AI Mode are not open to Pakistani creators yet
Google says it started testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode this week, linking to Search profiles. Google's help page on Search profiles, read the same day, says the profiles are currently available in India and the United States only. A Pakistani creator cannot claim one today.
That help page also now lists two countries, not the three it listed earlier in October, when Canada was named as well. We cannot tell from the page whether Canada was removed or the list was corrected, so the earlier guide on Search profiles not being available in Pakistan should be read with that in mind. The Pakistan position is unchanged: not available.
Google's documentation did add a creator property to VideoObject structured data in September 2026, so a video page that names its creator correctly is better placed if profiles ever open here.
What to check on a Pakistani site this week
Open Search Console and note your AI Overviews and AI Mode figures as a baseline, make sure every article has a clear image and date, add the preferred sources button if you publish news, and check that any official task page you run loads at a plain URL without a login. Then wait a month and compare.
- In Search Console, open the Performance report and filter for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Note clicks and impressions for the last 28 days.
- Check that your most cited pages open with the answer in the first paragraph and carry a date. Google links the phrase it cites, so the cited sentence should be on the page, not in an image.
- For news pages, confirm the article image is at least 1200 pixels wide and the published date is correct in the page and the structured data.
- If you run a news site, add the preferred sources button and link to your preferences page from the footer.
- If you run an official or company site, list the task pages a reader needs, open each one, and fix any that redirect to a login, a PDF or an error.
- Re-check the same Search Console filter after four weeks. A change in clicks per impression is the signal that the inline links have reached your queries.

Two things not to do. Do not add an llms.txt file or any "AI optimisation" trick on the strength of this announcement; Google's own guidance says there is no special method for its AI features, as the guide to skipping llms.txt and AEO hacks sets out. And do not change publication dates to look fresh; the carousels are for timely articles, and Google's documentation treats a fake date as a defect.
Common questions about Google's AI Search link changes
What did Google change in AI Mode and AI Overviews?
On 15 October 2026 Google announced more inline links placed higher in answers, a test of a dedicated section for official websites, news carousels in more locations and languages, thumbnail links to related articles, and a test of clickable creator names.
Does this apply in Pakistan?
AI Mode and AI Overviews work in Pakistan, so the inline link and thumbnail changes apply. Google has not named the countries in the news carousel rollout, and Search profiles are limited to India and the United States.
Do I need to add code to my site?
No. The only optional code is the preferred sources button for news sites. Structured data for articles and videos should already be in place.
How do I know if my site appears in AI answers?
Use the AI Overviews and AI Mode filter in the Search Console Performance report. It shows clicks and impressions from those surfaces.
Will the official website section replace my guide?
It can sit above your link for tasks with one official page. A guide still earns its click by explaining fees, steps and failures the official page leaves out.
Can a Pakistani creator get a Search profile?
Not yet. Google's help page lists India and the United States only, as of 19 October 2026.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked 19 October 2026. The five changes, their status and the seven times Preferred Sources figure come from Google's blog post of 15 October 2026. The country list for Search profiles comes from Google's Search profiles help page, and the VideoObject creator property from Google Search Central's documentation updates page, all read on 19 October 2026. Google did not name the countries or languages in the carousel rollout or give dates for the two tests, so we cannot say when, or whether, each reaches Pakistan, and we have not yet measured any change in our own Search Console data.
