Still life of a small leather satchel and a brass key, for a Pakistan guide on pia post check-in upgrade

Short answer: PIA sells a post check-in upgrade that confirms a better cabin at the airport before you board. Its page lists the fee by route, in US dollars: USD 25 on domestic flights, USD 75 from the Gulf, USD 400 from the United Kingdom and USD 550 from Toronto. The page does not say how to ask for it or whether the fee is refunded.

You checked in for a long flight home, the economy cabin is full, and a seat in the front row stays empty. Asking at the desk costs nothing. But it helps to know the price PIA has published before you stand there with a card in your hand.

We read PIA's Post Check-in Upgrade page on 13 October 2026. The fees below are copied from that page, in the order in which PIA lists them.

What the upgrade is

PIA describes the service as a seamless and assured upgrade process at the airport. It lets you confirm a cabin upgrade before boarding, with the enhanced comfort and priority services that come with it, and it removes the doubt about last minute availability.

The key word is "after". You do not buy this when you book the ticket. You buy it once you are at the airport, after you have checked in with your ordinary ticket.

The page prices this service in dollars. The guide to PIA Awards Plus miles explains the loyalty scheme, and the page we read does not tie the two together.

The fee depends on where you start

PIA lists the fee against the departure city and Pakistan. A passenger flying from Toronto to Pakistan pays USD 550. A domestic passenger flying between the big cities pays USD 25.

Domestic: Skardu, Quetta, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar and ATR flightsUSD 25

The page lists flights towards Pakistan from abroad, and domestic flights inside the country. It does not list a fee for a flight from Pakistan to the Gulf, Europe or North America. Do not assume the outward fee is the same. Ask.

What the page does not say

The page is short. It does not say who can buy the upgrade, how to apply, how long before departure you must ask, or whether the fee is refunded if the seat is not given. It does not name the cabin you move into, and it does not say what you get in each cabin.

Some points can be worked out from other PIA pages. Executive Economy is PIA's step-up cabin on international routes, with an extra baggage allowance and lounge access. But PIA's Executive Economy page does not say that this fee buys that product, so treat that link as a question to ask, not an answer.

What PIA's post check-in upgrade page does not say

Four things to settle with the agent before you pay:

  1. Which cabin you are moving to, and which seat.
  2. Whether the fee is in dollars or in rupees on the day, and which exchange rate applies.
  3. Whether a refund is due if the flight changes aircraft or the seat is lost.
  4. Whether the extra baggage and lounge access come with it.
Four points PIA upgrade page leaves open

Cheaper ways to get more room

If your goal is room and not the cabin, a seat choice may be enough. PIA has paid seat options and rules for the exit row, set out in the guide to PIA extra legroom seats. Compare the price with USD 25 for domestic flights before you decide.

If your goal is the lounge, check what your cards give you first. Some debit and credit cards give lounge access free, as covered in the page on airport lounge access cards.

If your goal is simply to get the baggage allowance, excess baggage may cost less than an upgrade. The guide to PIA baggage rules shows the advance rate.

Common questions

How much is a PIA upgrade at the airport?

PIA's page lists USD 25 on domestic flights, USD 75 from the Gulf and UAE, USD 150 from Kuala Lumpur and Beijing, USD 300 from Paris, USD 400 from the UK and USD 550 from Toronto.

Can I buy the upgrade online before the flight?

The page does not say. It describes the upgrade as an airport process. Call 111-786-786 to ask if it can be bought earlier.

Is the upgrade refundable?

The page does not say. Ask before you pay, and keep the receipt.

Does the fee apply to flights leaving Pakistan?

The page lists flights to Pakistan and domestic flights. It does not give a fee for flights leaving Pakistan, so ask for the rate.

Do I need to check in first?

Yes. The service is called post check-in, which means you have checked in with your ordinary ticket first. For domestic web check-in see the guide to PIA online check-in.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 13 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read PIA's Post Check-in Upgrade page and its Executive Economy page. The page has no date, so we do not know when the fees were set. We did not buy an upgrade, so we cannot say how the desk applies them.
