An old brass key on a dark wooden table, for an article on the iOS 26.7.1 security update

Short answer: Apple's iOS 26.7.1, released on 28 September 2026, fixes a CoreGraphics flaw that Apple says may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted people on earlier iOS versions. It supports iPhone 11 and later. Open Settings, General, Software Update and install the latest version shown.

Most people will never be a target of an attack like this. Still, the fix costs nothing and takes about 15 minutes. This article states exactly what Apple wrote, what it did not write, and how to update.

We opened Apple's security releases page and the iOS 26.7.1 security content page on 12 October 2026. The newest entry on Apple's list was still dated 28 September 2026, so there is no later Apple security release to wait for.

Apple names one flaw in iOS 26.7.1

Apple's page for iOS 26.7.1 lists one fix, CVE-2026-86950, in CoreGraphics. It is an out-of-bounds write issue that may lead to arbitrary code execution. In plain words, a bad file or image could make the phone run code the attacker chose.

Apple says it is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before this one. Apple does not say who was targeted or where. We do not know of any case in Pakistan, and Apple's page names none.

iOS 27.0.1 came the same day with no listed fixes

Apple released iOS 27.0.1 and iPadOS 27.0.1 on 28 September 2026 too. Apple's list says that update has no published CVE entries. That does not mean it fixes nothing. It means Apple has not listed any security details for it.

iOS 27 itself came out on 14 September 2026, together with iOS 26.7. Apple still ships a security update for the older iOS 26 line, so phones that stay on iOS 26 are not left out. Our guide to iOS 27 and the iPhones that support it lists which phones can move up.

We could not confirm from Apple's pages whether iOS 27.0 already carried this CoreGraphics fix. If you are on iOS 27, install the newest 27.x update on your screen. That is the safest choice.

How to update your iPhone to the latest version

Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update. Your phone shows the newest version it can run. Tap Update Now. Keep the phone plugged in and on Wi-Fi, and leave it alone until it restarts.

  1. Back up your phone first, to iCloud or to a computer.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi and plug in the charger.
  3. Open Settings, General, then Software Update.
  4. Tap Update Now and enter your passcode if asked.
  5. After the restart, return to Software Update and confirm it says your iPhone is up to date.

If the update gets stuck, our guide on fixing a phone stuck after an update covers the usual causes, such as low storage and a weak Wi-Fi signal.

Check that your iPhone is not too old

Apple lists iPhone 11 and later for this update. If you have an iPhone X or older, the page does not list your phone, and Apple has not said it will get this fix. Check your model in Settings, General, About.

A phone that no longer gets updates is not unusable. It is a higher risk for banking and wallet apps. If you use an old iPhone for JazzCash or bank transfers, keep a small balance and turn on the extra protections that your app offers.

New phone owners should also turn on theft protection. Our guide on turning on Stolen Device Protection on your iPhone explains the setting and what it asks of you.

What to do if you think your phone is targeted

Install the update first. Then restart the phone and watch for unusual battery drain or unexpected pop-ups. Apple's page does not describe signs of this attack, so we cannot list them.

Do not click links from unknown senders, and do not install profile files that a stranger sends. If you are a journalist, lawyer or activist and have reason to fear being watched, our guide on checking if someone is spying on your phone is a good next step.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read Apple's security releases list at support.apple.com and the iOS 26.7.1 security content page at support.apple.com on 12 October 2026. We did not verify how many Pakistani users have updated, and we have no report of an attack in Pakistan.
