A first YouTube Community Guidelines violation is usually only a warning, and a free policy training makes it expire after 90 days. A first strike stops uploads for 1 week, a second within 90 days stops them for 2 weeks, and a third within 90 days can remove the channel. You can appeal a warning or strike within 6 months, once per strike.

This is easy to confuse with a copyright strike, but they are separate systems with separate rules. This page covers only Community Guidelines: warnings, strikes, what each blocks, how long it lasts and how to appeal from YouTube Studio. We read YouTube Help's strike basics and appeal pages on 31 October 2026.

YouTube's Community Guidelines penalties, warning to termination

The ladder has four steps. A warning, then a 1 week freeze, then a 2 week freeze, then possible channel removal. Each strike expires 90 days after it was issued, so the clock matters as much as the count.

StageWhat happensHow long
WarningNo upload freeze; optional policy training offeredExpires 90 days after you finish the training
First strikeNo uploads, live streams, Premieres, custom thumbnails or posts1 week freeze, strike stays 90 days
Second strike in 90 daysSame restrictions2 week freeze
Third strike in 90 daysChannel may be permanently removedPermanent
Severe abuse, onceChannel can be terminated without warningPermanent

The YouTube Community Guidelines strike basics page also says scheduled public videos are set to private during a freeze. You have to reschedule them once it ends. Privileges come back automatically after the week, but the strike itself stays on the channel for the full 90 days.

Take the policy training to clear a warning

When you get a warning, YouTube may offer an optional policy training. Finish it and the warning expires 90 days later. Break the same policy again inside those 90 days and the warning may stay and you may get a strike instead.

Not every warning qualifies for training, and YouTube says repeat offenders can be barred from it. So treat the training as a one-time reset, not a routine. Read the policy the warning names before you upload again, because the second offence in that window is the expensive one.

Warnings and strikes cover everything on the channel, not only videos. Comments, links, posts, thumbnails, and even private and unlisted videos are checked. So a thumbnail alone can break the rules even when the video does not.

Deleting the video does not remove a strike

Taking the video down does not cancel the strike. YouTube says it stays until 90 days after it was issued. Deleting it also removes your chance to appeal, because the strike stays and you cannot appeal again.

The temptation is understandable. A strike lands, panic follows, and the video goes. But the right move is the appeal, if you think YouTube got it wrong, or simply waiting out the 90 days while uploading carefully.

Do not open a second channel to keep posting during a freeze either. YouTube's rules say that using another channel to get around a restriction can lead to termination of both the old and the new channel.

Appeal a strike from YouTube Studio in 4 steps

Open YouTube Studio, go to the Dashboard, find the Channel violations card and select Appeal. Explain why the content follows the guidelines. You have 6 months from the warning or strike, and each strike can be appealed only once.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
  2. Open the Dashboard.
  3. Find the Channel violations card and select Appeal.
  4. Explain clearly why the content follows the guidelines, then submit.

On the Android Studio app, a removed video can be appealed from Content: select the restricted video, tap the restriction, tap Review issues, choose the issue, enter your reason and submit. Content removals of videos, posts, playlists and thumbnails can be appealed for up to 1 year.

Four steps to appeal a YouTube Community Guidelines strike in YouTube Studio

Write the appeal like a short note to a reviewer, not a complaint. Name the policy, say what the video actually shows, and point to the timestamp that explains context, such as news, education or documentary purpose. One clear paragraph beats five angry ones.

Three outcomes after you appeal

If YouTube agrees the content was fine, it is reinstated and the strike removed. If it was fine but not suitable for all ages, it comes back age-restricted. If YouTube decides it broke the rules, the strike stays, with no extra penalty for appealing.

The YouTube appeals page adds one more detail. If a warning is overturned, your next offence is again treated as a warning. YouTube emails you the result. It does not publish a response time.

An age restriction is not the end. It limits who can see the video and can cut ads, and it has its own appeal, covered under YouTube age-restricted videos.

A Community Guidelines strike is about harmful content. A copyright strike is about using someone else's work. A yellow icon or a rejected Partner Program application is about advertiser rules and channel quality. Each has its own fix.

If your problem is music or clips you did not own, the 90 day route is under fixing a YouTube copyright strike. If the channel has already been removed, the steps for a terminated YouTube channel appeal apply. And for a channel that lost monetisation for reused or repetitive content, see the YouTube monetisation disabled appeal.

Common questions

How long does a YouTube Community Guidelines strike last?

90 days from the date it was issued. The upload freeze is 1 week for the first strike and 2 weeks for a second within 90 days.

Does a warning count as a strike?

No. A first violation is usually only a warning. Finish the policy training and it expires 90 days later.

Will deleting the video remove the strike?

No. The strike stays for 90 days, and you lose the chance to appeal.

How long do I have to appeal a strike?

6 months from the date of the warning or strike. Each strike can be appealed only once.

Can one video get my channel deleted?

Yes, in cases of severe abuse. YouTube says a single serious violation can lead to termination without warning.

Can I upload from another channel during a strike?

No. Using another channel to get around a restriction can get both channels terminated.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 31 October 2026. We read YouTube Help's "Community Guidelines strike basics on YouTube" and "Appeal Community Guidelines actions" on support.google.com on 31 October 2026. YouTube publishes no appeal response time and no character limit for appeals, so we give neither. The appeal-writing advice is our own. We have not appealed a strike ourselves.
