Turn a Lecture or Meeting Recording Into Notes With ChatGPT in Pakistan

ChatGPT can now turn an audio file into a transcript and notes. Tap the attach button, add an MP3, M4A or WAV file of up to 512 MB, and ask for a transcript or a summary. It works only on paid plans, and Free users in Pakistan will not see it yet.

OpenAI added audio uploads on 6 October 2026. Its release notes say you can upload a meeting, interview or lecture and turn it into "structured notes or a follow-up email draft". For a student with a two hour recorded class, or a shop owner with a long supplier call, that saves an evening of typing.

We read OpenAI's help page for file and audio uploads in full. Below is what it allows, which phone recordings work, and the limits that matter for Urdu and English recordings made in Pakistan.

Audio uploads need a paid ChatGPT plan

OpenAI says audio uploads are available on paid ChatGPT subscriptions and workspaces, and "not available on the Free plan at this time". Documents, images and spreadsheets can still be uploaded on Free, but only 3 files a day.

Go is the cheapest paid plan in Pakistan. OpenAI's pricing page did not show us a rupee price, and Go was reported at Rs 1,400 a month when it launched here. Plus is the next step up. OpenAI also says availability "may vary by workspace settings, region, client version, and model". So if you pay and still do not see it, update the app first.

How to transcribe a recording in ChatGPT

Attach the audio file to a chat, then say what you want: a full transcript, a summary, notes or a list of tasks. You can then ask follow-up questions about the recording in the same chat.

1. Open ChatGPT on the web, or update the app on your phone.
2. Tap the plus or attach button and pick the audio file from your phone or computer.
3. Type a clear request, for example: "Give me a full transcript, then a one page summary with headings."
4. Read the transcript against the recording for names, numbers and dates.
5. Ask follow-ups such as "What did the teacher say about the exam?" or "List every deadline mentioned."

Ask for the transcript first and the notes second. When something in the notes looks wrong, you can then find the exact line in the transcript and check it against the audio.

Prompts that work well for classes and meetings

• "Turn this lecture into revision notes with 5 headings and a short quiz at the end."
• "Summarise this meeting: decisions, open questions and who does what."
• "Write a polite follow-up email to the supplier based on this call."
• "Translate the Urdu parts of this transcript into English and mark them."

Once you have notes, the same chat can build study material from them. The method is the one we used to make flashcards and quizzes from notes.

File types and size limits for audio

ChatGPT accepts WAV, MP3, OGG, OGA, FLAC, AAC, M4A, PCM, and audio-only WebM and MP4. Each file can be up to 512 MB. Video files are not accepted as audio, even if they contain sound.

WhatsApp voice notes are the common problem. OpenAI lists OGG and OGA, but not the .opus files WhatsApp usually saves. We could not confirm whether ChatGPT accepts them. If an upload fails, open the voice note in a free audio converter and save it as MP3 first.

OpenAI says very long recordings may be processed in sections and "may time out". For a three hour class, splitting the file into hour long parts is safer.

Urdu and mixed language recordings may have errors

OpenAI warns that "transcripts may contain errors", that speaker labels "may be unreliable", and that performance "may vary across languages". Most Pakistani classes and calls switch between Urdu and English, so check names, figures and dates against the audio.

We have not yet run our own Urdu transcription test with this feature. Our earlier test of which AI handles Urdu best covered written Urdu, not speech. Record close to the speaker, away from fans and traffic, because background noise does more damage than accent.

Never rely on a transcript alone for anything with legal or money consequences. A wrong digit in a fee or a date can cost more than the time you saved.

Recordings stay saved until you delete them

Deleting a chat does not delete a file saved in your ChatGPT Library. OpenAI says you have to open Library, select the file and delete it there. Content already pulled into a chat can also stay in that chat.

That matters for recordings of other people. Ask before you record a class, a meeting or a call, and check the rules on recording phone calls in Pakistan before you upload one. Also lock your account, because anyone signed in to it can open those files. The steps to see who is logged in to your ChatGPT take two minutes.

Upload limits apply too. Paid users can upload up to 80 files every 3 hours, and storage is capped at 25 GB per user.

Common questions

Can I transcribe audio with free ChatGPT in Pakistan?

No. OpenAI says audio uploads are not available on the Free plan at this time. You need Go, Plus, Pro or a business workspace.

What is the maximum audio file size for ChatGPT?

512 MB per file. Very long recordings may be split into sections or time out, so upload long classes in parts.

Can ChatGPT transcribe Urdu audio?

It accepts audio in any language, but OpenAI warns accuracy varies by language. Check Urdu and mixed language transcripts carefully.

Why does my WhatsApp voice note fail to upload?

WhatsApp saves voice notes as .opus files, which are not on OpenAI's list. Convert the file to MP3 and try again.

Can I upload a video of a lecture?

No. Files identified as video are rejected. Save only the audio track as MP3 or M4A, then upload that.

Does deleting the chat delete my recording?

Not always. A file saved in Library stays there until you delete it from Library itself.
