FBR Says Only Two Places Can Legally Verify an NTN. Here They Are.
FBR names e.fbr.gov.pk and the Tax Asaan app as the only legal verification routes. How to check an NTN or ATL status by CNIC.

If you want to check an NTN, or whether somebody is on the Active Taxpayer List, FBR has published a notice about where you are allowed to do it.
It names two resources. Its own website, and its own app.
That notice sits on FBR's verification page, and it is worth reading before you type your CNIC into anything.
What FBR actually says
Quoted as written, from FBR's online verification page:
"Only Following Official resources are legal for the verification regarding Federal Board of Revenue. e.fbr.gov.pk. TAX Asaan Mobile Application. Concerned Department will not responsible for any misleading information get from illegal/unauthorized resources."
| Route | What it is |
|---|---|
| e.fbr.gov.pk | FBR's own online verification services |
| Tax Asaan | The app published by the Federal Board of Revenue |
| Anything else | Described by FBR as unauthorised |
Both are free. You need a CNIC or an NTN number, and nothing else.
Why the warning is there
Search NTN verification and you will find a row of sites offering to check it for you. They are not FBR, and FBR has said plainly it will not stand behind what they tell you.
That matters more than it sounds, because a filer status is not trivia. It decides the tax rate applied to your bank transactions, your vehicle registration and your property dealings. A wrong answer costs money in a direction you will not notice until later.
There is also the obvious question of why a third party needs your CNIC number to run a check you can do yourself in seconds on the official site.
Which app, exactly
Take the app from the store, and check the publisher rather than the app name.
Tax Asaan is published by the Federal Board of Revenue. We checked the listing ourselves on 12 August 2026 and it had been updated the day before, making it one of the more actively maintained government apps in Pakistan. The full sweep is in our test of Pakistan's government apps.
That check matters because tax and identity apps attract imitations. We found three different government apps sharing one name earlier this week, which is covered in the Pak Hajj app test.
How to run the check
- Go to e.fbr.gov.pk and open Online Verification Services.
- Pick the verification you need. NTN inquiry and Active Taxpayer status are separate checks.
- Enter the CNIC without dashes, or the NTN if you have it.
- Read the result on the official page. Not a screenshot somebody sent you.
- Save the result if you need it as evidence for a bank or a counterparty.
We are deliberately not describing the individual dropdowns and screen labels. The verification service runs as an application whose internals we could not read from outside, and walking you through screens we have not seen is how guides send people in circles.
NTN and filer status are different things
People conflate these constantly and then get confused by the result.
An NTN is your tax registration number. Having one means you are registered. It does not mean you are compliant.
The Active Taxpayer List is about whether you filed on time. You can hold an NTN for years and still be off the ATL, which is the situation that costs money, because non-filer rates then apply to ordinary transactions.
So checking an NTN tells you somebody exists in the system. Checking ATL status tells you whether they kept up.
If the check says you are not on the list
The deadline is 30 September 2026 for tax year 2026, and filing by then keeps you on without a penalty.
Miss it and getting restored now costs Rs 25,000 for individuals, up from Rs 1,000 on 1 July. A lot of tax pages have not caught up with that change, and we set it out in the surcharge that went up 25 times.
The filing process itself is in our guide to filing your income tax return, and if you have never registered at all, start with becoming a tax filer.
Checking somebody else
Perfectly legitimate, and common before doing business with a supplier or a landlord.
Verifying a counterparty's ATL status before a large transaction tells you what tax rate will apply, and whether the person claiming to be a filer actually is. That is a normal commercial check and the official service supports it.
What it will not give you is somebody's tax return, income or affairs. Verification confirms registration and status, nothing more.
Questions readers are asking
How do I check an NTN by CNIC?
Through FBR's online verification services at e.fbr.gov.pk, or the Tax Asaan app. Enter the CNIC without dashes. Both are free.
Which sites can legally verify FBR information?
FBR's own notice names e.fbr.gov.pk and the Tax Asaan mobile application, and states the department is not responsible for information from unauthorised resources.
Is NTN verification free?
Yes, on both official routes. Nobody should be charging you for it.
What is the difference between NTN and ATL?
An NTN means you are registered. The Active Taxpayer List means you filed on time. You can have an NTN and still be off the ATL, which is when non-filer rates apply.
Which is the official FBR app?
Tax Asaan, published by the Federal Board of Revenue. Check the publisher name in the store rather than the app name.
Can I check somebody else's filer status?
Yes. It is a normal check before a transaction. It shows registration and status only, not their income or returns.
What if I am not on the Active Taxpayer List?
File your return. The deadline for tax year 2026 is 30 September, and restoration after that now carries a Rs 25,000 surcharge for individuals.
