How to Start a Telegram Secret Chat and Set a Self-Destruct Timer in Pakistan
Start a Telegram secret chat in Pakistan: how it differs from cloud chats, the self-destruct timer steps, and what you lose when you log out of a device.
Short answer: Open the person's profile in Telegram, tap the three dots, then Start Secret Chat. Tap the clock icon to set a self-destruct timer. Secret chats use end-to-end encryption, work only on the device that started them, and are lost if you log out of that device.
Most people think every Telegram chat is private in the same way. It is not. Your ordinary chats are stored in Telegram's cloud so you can open them on your phone, laptop and tablet. That convenience is the trade. If you want one conversation that lives on one phone and nowhere else, Telegram has a separate tool for it.
We read Telegram's own FAQ on 13 October 2026 and wrote down what it says about cloud chats, secret chats and the timer. Our earlier guide to securing your Telegram account covers passwords, hidden numbers and sessions. This one is about the chat itself.
Cloud chats and secret chats are different things
Telegram's normal chats are cloud chats. They are encrypted between your app and Telegram's servers, and stored there so every device can read them. Secret chats use end-to-end encryption between two devices and are not part of the cloud. Only the two phones hold the messages.
Telegram says secret chats are meant for people who want more secrecy than average. They leave no trace on its servers, support self-destructing messages and do not allow forwarding.
| Feature | Cloud chat | Secret chat |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption | Between app and Telegram servers | End to end, between the two devices |
| Stored in Telegram cloud | Yes | No |
| Open on another device | Yes | No, one device only |
| Forwarding | Allowed | Not allowed |
| Self-destruct timer | Media only | All messages |
Starting a secret chat takes two taps
You start a secret chat from the other person's profile, and they appear as a separate chat in your list. You can make as many secret chats with the same contact as you like.
- Open the profile of the person you want to message.
- Tap the three dots.
- Tap Start Secret Chat.
- Tap the clock icon and choose a timer, if you want messages to disappear.
The clock icon sits in the input field on iOS and in the top bar on Android. Telegram also says that when you delete messages on your side of a secret chat, the app on the other side is ordered to delete them too.
The timer starts when the message is seen
Telegram says the self-destruct clock starts the moment the message is displayed on the recipient's screen, shown by two check marks. When time runs out the message disappears from both devices. The timer in a secret chat only covers messages sent after you set it.
The timer is also available for media in ordinary cloud chats, but only for media, not text. So a timer does not turn a cloud chat into a secret one.
Telegram also says it will try to send a notification if a screenshot is taken, but warns there is no bulletproof way to detect screenshots on some systems. Nothing stops a person from photographing the screen with another phone. Share sensitive things only with people you trust.
Know what you lose by using secret chats
The cost of a secret chat is convenience. Telegram says all secret chats are device specific and safe for as long as your device is safe in your pocket. If someone gets into your unlocked phone, they can read the chat there.
Secret chats are tied to one device. Telegram says that if you log out, you lose all your secret chats and the messages inside them. Logging out does not delete messages on your partner's phone either. To wipe those, choose Clear History first.
That means a new phone does not inherit them. You cannot read the chat on your laptop. For most daily messaging, cloud chats are the practical choice, with a strong password and two step verification on the account.
Telegram also lets you check that a secret chat has not been intercepted. When a chat is created, the devices show a picture of the encryption key. If both people see the same picture, the connection is secure.
Use a secret chat for the odd conversation that matters, such as a bank detail you must pass on once. If someone is blackmailing you in any chat, keep evidence and follow the steps to report online blackmail in Pakistan. Compare with WhatsApp tools in disappearing messages and View Once and locking a WhatsApp chat.
Common questions
Are normal Telegram chats end-to-end encrypted?
No. Telegram says cloud chats use client to server encryption. Only secret chats are end-to-end encrypted.
Can I use a secret chat on two phones?
No. Telegram says secret chats are device specific and not part of the cloud.
Can I make a secret chat in a group?
We did not find that in the pages we read. Telegram's FAQ says to start a secret chat from a person's profile.
What happens to a secret chat if I log out?
You lose the secret chats and their messages on that device, and your partner's copy is not deleted.
Can someone still take a screenshot?
Yes. Telegram says it tries to alert you, but cannot always detect screenshots or a photo of the screen.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked on 13 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read Telegram's official FAQ, in the sections on secret chats, self-destructing messages and logging out. We did not test the screens on a live account, and the menu icons can differ between iOS and Android versions.
