Start with the thing that saves you a trip.

A duplicate bill is not a special document. There is no application, no fee and no counter to queue at. It is your online bill, printed. Anyone with your reference number and a browser can produce it in about a minute.

People spend mornings at utility offices asking for something they could print at home, so here is where to get it and what to do when the website will not cooperate.

Where to get it

Most electricity distribution companies do not run their own billing system. Their bills are hosted centrally by the Power Information Technology Company, which is why one address covers so many of them.

The search box asks for a Reference No or a Customer ID. Either works, which matters because people often have one and not the other.

Finding your reference number

This is where most attempts fail, and the fix is boring but it works.

1. Take any previous bill. The reference number is printed near the top. It does not change between months.
2. Type it exactly, including leading zeros. A dropped zero returns nothing rather than an error explaining itself.
3. If it is rejected, try the Customer ID instead. They are different fields and the form accepts both.
4. Do not use a family member's bill unless the connection is genuinely theirs. The number identifies the meter, not the household.
5. No old bill anywhere? Your meter reader knows it, and the company office can look it up against your address and CNIC.

You will see pages insisting your number must be a specific length. We are not repeating a digit count. The forms we tested ask for the reference number without stating a length, and if you copy what is printed on your bill you cannot get the length wrong.

When the website is the problem

This is the part no other guide gives you, and it comes from having actually opened these sites rather than describing them.

When we tested every electricity distribution company's website, the results were uneven. Two failed their security certificate and would only load over an unencrypted connection. One returned a server error on every address we tried. One sits on a different domain suffix from the one everybody shares.

Here is the useful consequence. Because billing is hosted centrally, your bill is usually reachable through the central portal even when your own company's site is broken. The site being down does not mean the bill is unavailable.

One thing not to do. If a browser warns you that a connection is not secure, do not click through it to reach a bill. Use the central portal instead. The full test results are in our piece on testing every electricity company's website.

Gas is a separate system

Gas bills are not on the electricity portal. Sui Northern and Sui Southern each run their own.

The same reference number discipline applies. Copy the consumer number from a previous gas bill rather than trying to remember it, and enter it exactly.

What the duplicate is actually good for

Worth knowing, because people request one for reasons it does not serve.

It works as proof of address for most applications, as a record of what you were charged, and as the thing you need when disputing a reading. It is what a bank or an office means when they ask for a utility bill.

What it is not is a payment receipt. A printed duplicate shows what was billed, not what was paid. If you need proof of payment, that is your bank record, the paid stamp, or the confirmation from whichever app you used.

Getting the duplicate is often step one of a complaint rather than the end of the job.
