A laptop with a softly glowing blank screen on a desk in a small home workspace at night, a cup of tea beside it, for Fiverr vs Upwork in Pakistan

Short answer: Yes, freelancing on Fiverr and Upwork is still worth it in Pakistan in 2026, if you sell one clear skill and get paid through a proper channel. Fiverr takes 20% of every order and buyers come to your gig, so it costs nothing to start. Upwork takes 0% to 15% per contract, but you pay US$0.15 for every Connect you spend on a proposal. For most beginners, Fiverr is the easier start. For skilled people who want long, well paid contracts, Upwork is usually better.

We read both platforms' own help pages on 6 November 2026 for every fee on this page. The market is real and growing. State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data shows Pakistani freelancers brought in US$196.9 million in September 2026 alone, up 48.8% on September 2025, as we explained in our SBP freelance earnings report. That figure covers all freelance receipts, not only these two sites.

Fiverr and Upwork compared for Pakistani freelancers in 2026: fees, how you get work and payout time

Fiverr and Upwork side by side for a Pakistani freelancer

The biggest difference is how you get work. On Upwork you find a job and send a proposal, paying Connects each time. On Fiverr you publish a gig, a fixed service with a price, and buyers search and find you. Fees, payout time and verification also differ.

Upwork has also started showing some Pakistani accounts a "Local Wallet" option for rupee withdrawals at US$1.99 a withdrawal, seen in an account notice on 6 November 2026 but not yet on Upwork's help pages. The tested route today is in our Upwork to JazzCash and Easypaisa guide.

Fiverr fees are a flat 20% and money clears in 14 days

Fiverr's help page says freelancers receive 80% of the client's cleared payment, so the fee is 20% on every order, including extras and tips. Money then waits 14 days before you can withdraw it, or 7 days on Seller Plus, Top Rated and Pro.

Here is how one US$100 order moves, using Fiverr's own rules:

  1. You deliver the order. The buyer has 3 days to accept, ask for a revision or extend the review.
  2. If the buyer does nothing, the order completes on its own after 3 days.
  3. Your US$80 then clears 14 days later. That is about 17 days after delivery.
  4. You withdraw. A Payoneer account costs US$3 (minimum US$10, up to 2 business days). A bank transfer via Payoneer costs US$1 (minimum US$20, 1 to 3 business days in local currency).
  5. Fiverr allows up to US$5,000 per withdrawal and adds a 24 hour wait after your first withdrawal or a change of method.

Fiverr also lists PayPal at US$0, but whether PayPal works for you depends on your account, as our PayPal in Pakistan guide explains. For every method and wait, read how to withdraw Fiverr earnings in Pakistan. To get money sooner, see Fiverr pending clearance and Early Payout, which costs 1% for eligible sellers.

Upwork fees are lower but every proposal costs Connects

Upwork's help page says its service fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract and stays fixed once the contract starts. You see it before you send a proposal. The hidden cost is Connects: US$0.15 each, spent every time you apply.

On a US$100 fixed price job at a 10% fee, you keep US$90. It becomes available 5 days after the client approves the milestone. Direct to Local Bank then costs US$0.99 per transfer, so about US$89 reaches your bank, minus any charge your bank adds. Our Upwork fees guide has the full table.

Connects are where beginners lose money. Upwork refunds them only if the client cancels the job before hiring anyone or Upwork removes the post. If the client rejects you, picks someone else or the job expires, the Connects are gone. New users may get a one time bonus of 50 Connects after buying Connects or joining Freelancer Plus. Read how Upwork Connects work before you buy any.

What a US$100 job leaves you with on Fiverr and on Upwork, with fees and payout charges

Each platform has clear pros and cons for Pakistanis in 2026

Fiverr is cheaper to start and brings buyers to you, but its 20% fee and 14 day clearance are heavy. Upwork pays better for skilled work, but proposals cost money and competition for each job is high. Both suspend accounts that break their rules.

Fiverr pros and cons

  • Pro: no cost to apply. You publish gigs for free and wait for orders.
  • Pro: packages. You can sell Basic, Standard and Premium versions of one service.
  • Con: 20% of every order, more than Upwork's top rate of 15%.
  • Con: new gigs can sit with no orders for weeks while you build reviews.
  • Con: 14 days before money clears, plus the review days.

Upwork pros and cons

  • Pro: lower fee, and long hourly contracts with the same client.
  • Pro: direct withdrawal to a Pakistani bank or JazzCash and Easypaisa wallet.
  • Con: every proposal costs Connects, refunded only in rare cases.
  • Con: a weak proposal wins nothing, so the first contract is the hardest step.

Risks on both platforms

Account suspension. Both platforms can restrict or close an account for policy breaks. A mismatch between your CNIC, profile country and payment name is a common cause. See how to appeal an Upwork suspension and how to appeal a Fiverr restriction.

VPN and location. Fiverr's rules list "methods to hide identity or location" as a reason an account can lose selling rights, and its verification help says to turn the VPN off. Keep your real location on both sites. If you need a VPN for client work in Pakistan, register it with PTA.

AI and low end work. Upwork's In-Demand Skills 2026 report, published on 4 February 2026 from its 2025 marketplace earnings for US clients, says earnings for skills that mention AI grew 109% in a year. AI video generation and editing grew 329%, AI integration 178% and AI data labelling 154%. The same report says full stack development, virtual assistance, data analytics and graphic design stayed strong. In our experience running SEO and marketing projects, clients now pay less for plain writing and simple design, and more for people who use AI tools well and check the output. We did not find a Fiverr report with comparable figures, so we make no claim about Fiverr demand.

Payment access. PayPal is not a dependable route for most Pakistani freelancers, which is why Payoneer, local bank transfer and Upwork's wallet option matter.

You earn through packages, retainers and long term clients

Most steady income comes from repeat clients, not one-off orders. Sell one service in clear packages, win your first few reviews at a fair price, then turn good clients into monthly retainers inside the platform. Hourly suits ongoing work; fixed price suits a defined task.

Services that sell

Pick from the skills Upwork's own report names as strong or growing: web and full stack development, data analytics, virtual assistance, graphic and logo design, video editing, ecommerce management and social media strategy. Choose one you can already do well. A gig for "everything" ranks for nothing.

Hourly or fixed price

On Upwork, hourly contracts are billed Monday to Sunday and the money is available 10 days later. Use hourly for open-ended work like store management or ad campaigns. Use fixed price, with milestones, for a website or a logo. On Fiverr almost everything is fixed price per order.

How to get the first order

  1. Verify your identity first. Follow our guides for Fiverr ID verification with a CNIC and Upwork identity verification.
  2. Write a profile that names one service and one type of client.
  3. Show 3 to 5 samples you made yourself, even if they are practice work.
  4. On Upwork, apply only to jobs posted recently that match your samples, and write the first two lines about the client's problem.
  5. On Fiverr, price your Basic package low enough to win the first reviews, then raise it.
  6. Deliver early and ask for honest feedback. Reviews decide your next orders.

Keep long term clients inside the rules

Never take a platform client's payment outside the platform on your own. Fiverr says taking payments off the platform breaks its Terms of Service and can lead to suspension, and it allows outside communication tools only after an order is placed. Upwork says it has a zero tolerance policy on moving a client off the site unless a conversion fee is paid, and that breaking this rule leads to suspension. The right way is a retainer or a long hourly contract on the platform. If a client wants to move, ask Upwork about the conversion fee first.

Starting costs very little, but plan for tax and banking

Fiverr costs nothing to join. Upwork is free to join, but you will spend money on Connects. You also need a laptop, a stable internet line and a Payoneer, bank or wallet account in your own name. Then register your income properly so the low tax rate applies.

ItemWhat it costs or needs
Fiverr account and gigsFree to join
Upwork accountFree to join, Connects at US$0.15 each to apply
Withdrawal accountPayoneer, a Pakistani bank account, or a JazzCash or Easypaisa wallet for Upwork
Freelancer Digital AccountOffered by banks under SBP's 2023 framework, keeps part of your income in dollars
PSEB registrationNeeded for the 0.25% tax rate on IT export income

Four points matter for Pakistani freelancers:

  • PSEB and tax. The Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) lists a reduced income tax of 0.25% on IT exports as a benefit of registration, and FBR confirms the 0.25% rate. Other service exporters pay 1%. Read PSEB registration for freelancers.
  • Tax return. You still file a return each year. Our guide on filing a freelancer income tax return shows which income head to use.
  • Dollar account. SBP lets freelancers open a foreign currency account alongside a rupee account. See open a Freelancer Digital Account.
  • Proof of income. Your bank issues an electronic Proceeds Realisation Certificate (e-PRC) when foreign money lands. Read how to get an e-PRC.

Our view: send money through a bank or regulated wallet, never through a relative's account or informal dealers. The tax concession follows the banking trail. For Payoneer's own charges, see Payoneer fees in Pakistan.

Our recommendation depends on your profile

Beginners should start on Fiverr with one packaged service and a small Upwork Connects budget on the side. Skilled specialists should put most effort into Upwork, where long contracts pay more. Agencies can use both, with Upwork for big projects and Fiverr for packaged services.

  • Beginner with one skill: start on Fiverr. It costs nothing, and buyers find you. Open an Upwork profile too, but spend Connects only on jobs that clearly match your samples.
  • Skilled specialist (developer, data analyst, ads or SEO expert): focus on Upwork. The lower fee and hourly contracts suit higher value work, and direct bank or wallet withdrawal is cheap.
  • Agency or team: use Upwork for larger, ongoing contracts and Fiverr for fixed packages like logo sets or monthly social media posts. Register with PSEB as a company and keep every payment in one banked trail.

Whichever you choose, learn the tools clients now ask for. Our AI prompts for freelancers and the free NAVTTC AI freelancing courses are good places to start.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fiverr or Upwork better for beginners in Pakistan?

Fiverr is usually easier for beginners because it costs nothing to apply and buyers find your gig. Upwork pays better later, but each proposal costs Connects at US$0.15 each.

How much does Fiverr take from Pakistani sellers?

Fiverr keeps 20% of every order. You receive 80% of the cleared payment, including extras and tips, and then pay a withdrawal fee, such as US$3 to a Payoneer account.

How much is Upwork's fee in 2026?

Upwork's service fee is 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you send a proposal and fixed once the contract starts. Withdrawing to a local bank costs US$0.99.

Can I withdraw Upwork money to JazzCash or Easypaisa?

Yes. Upwork's Direct to Wallet lists JazzCash, Easypaisa, NayaPay, SadaPay and Finja for Pakistan. The wallet name must exactly match your verified Upwork name.

Can I use a VPN on Fiverr or Upwork?

Do not use one to change your location. Fiverr lists hiding identity or location as a reason to lose selling rights, and both platforms check that your country matches your ID.

Do Pakistani freelancers pay tax on Fiverr and Upwork income?

Yes. PSEB-registered IT exporters pay a 0.25% final tax on export income received through banks. You still file a yearly income tax return with FBR.

Can I work with a Fiverr or Upwork client outside the platform?

Not on your own. Fiverr bans off-platform payment, and Upwork requires a conversion fee before a client relationship moves off the site. Breaking either rule can get you suspended.
